RADIUS
Examples:
3. Center at origin and a radius of 4 units
1. Center at (2, 7) and a radius of 6 units
Solution: C(0,0), r = 4 units
Solution: (x – 2) 2 + (y – 7) 2 = 62 x2 + y2 = 42

3. Center at (-2, -5) and radius of 5 units 8. C(0, -7) and radius of 5 units
(x – 4) 𝟐 + (y + 1) 𝟐 = 𝟕𝟐 (Simplify)
(x 𝟐 − 𝟖𝒙 + 𝟏𝟔 )+ ( y𝟐 + 𝟐𝒚 + 𝟏) = 49
x 𝟐 − 𝟖𝒙 + 𝟏𝟔 + y𝟐 + 𝟐𝒚 + 𝟏 = 49
x 𝟐 + y𝟐 − 𝟖𝒙 + +𝟐𝒚 + 𝟏𝟕 − 𝟒𝟗 = 𝟎
x 𝟐 + y𝟐 − 𝟖𝒙 + 𝟐𝒚 − 𝟑𝟐 = 𝟎

2. Write the general equation of a circle with center C(0, -3) and a
radius of 5 units. Then determine the values od D , E and F.
x 𝟐 + (y + 3) 𝟐 = 𝟓𝟐 (Simplify)
x 𝟐 + y𝟐 + 𝟔𝒚 + 𝟗 = 25
x 𝟐 + y𝟐 + 𝟔𝒚 + 𝟗 − 𝟐𝟓 = 0
x 𝟐 + y𝟐 + 𝟔𝒚 − 𝟏𝟔 = 𝟎

3. 𝒙𝟐 -14 x + ____ (x -7)(x - 7) or (𝒙 − 𝟕) 𝟐
𝟐 121 (x + 11)(x + 11) or (𝒙 + 𝟏𝟏) 𝟐
4.𝒙 + 22x + ____
𝟐 (x -9 /2)(x – 9/2) or (𝒙 − 𝟗/𝟐) 𝟐
5.𝒙 - 9x + 81/4

3. What is the center and the radius of the circle x𝟐 + y𝟐 - 6x – 10y + 18 = 0
Solution: To determine its center and radius, write the equation in standard form
(x – h)𝟐 + (y – k) 𝟐 =r 𝟐
x𝟐 + y𝟐 - 6x – 10y + 18 = 0
x𝟐 - 6x + y𝟐 – 10y = - 18 (Add both sides of the equation the square of ½ the
