CENTER- RADIUS FORM
OF THE EQUATION OF
THE CIRCLE
(STANDARD FORM)
OBJECTIVES
The learner will be able to:
1. determine the center and radius of a circle
given its equation;
2. illustrate the center-radius form of equation
of a circle; and
3. explain the process of getting equations of
the circle and also the center and radius; and
4. participate in class.
Circle is set of all
points (x, y) in a
plane that are
equidistant from a
fixed center point.
In the circle at the right, let
point (x, y) represents any point on
the circle whose center is the origin.
Let r represents the radius of the
circle.
By the
Pythagorean
Theorem, you can
write x^2+y^2=r^2.
This is the
equation of the
circle with center
at the origin.
If the center is (h, k)
with radius r then the
equation of the circle is
2 2 2
(x-h) +(y-k) = r .
