UNDERSTAND
Title: WTITTENR RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Methodology refers the discussion regarding the specific methods chosen and used
in a research paper. This discussion also encompasses the theoretical concepts that further
provide information about the methods selection and application.
The methodology section describes actions to be taken to investigate a research problem and
the rationale for the application of specific procedures or techniques used to identify, select,
process, and analyze information applied to understanding the problem, thereby, allowing the
reader to critically evaluate a study’s overall validity and reliability. The methodology section
of a research paper answers two main questions: How was the data collected or generated?
And, how was it analyzed? The writing should be direct and precise and always written in the
past tense.

Qualitative Research Methodology is comprised of the following:

a. Research Design
b. Respondents and Sampling
c. Research Instruments
d. Data Analysis
e. Data Gathering Procedure
How to write a research methodology
Step 1: Explain your methodological approach
Foremost in writing a methodological approach, a researcher should start by introducing the overall
approach to the research. It should focus in answering the questions: What research problem or
question did you investigate? What type of data did you need to achieve this aim? A good and
suitable methodology depends on the discipline and approach. Begin with a discussion of the
rationale and assumptions underpinning your methodology. To be guided with the right approach to
choose, the researcher should consider the following questions:
• What is the most suitable approach to answering your research questions?
• Is this a standard methodology in your field or does it require justification?
• Were there any ethical or philosophical considerations?
• What are the criteria for validity and reliability in this type of research?
Step 2: Describe your methods of data collection
After presenting your overall methodological approach, you should clearly plan out the full details of
your data collection method.
In qualitative research, since methods are often more flexible and subjective, it is important to reflect

on the approach you took and explain the choices you made. Discuss the criteria you used to select
participants or sources, the context in which the research was conducted, and the role you played in
collecting the data (e.g. were you an active participant or a passive observer?) This section presents a
bird’s eye view of the whole procedure in collecting data. The researcher should consider the method,
instrument, locale, respondents, ethical standards, and how data should be presented and analyzed.
Step 3: Describe your methods of analysis
The researcher you should indicate how you processed and analyzed the data. In qualitative research,
the analysis will be based on language, images and observations (often involving some form of
textual analysis). Depending on the purpose and relevance of the research, the researcher can decide
which method suits the procedure and how the data will be treated. Methods of data analysis can be:
• Content analysis: this method is used when categorizing and discussing the meaning of words,
phrases and sentences.
• Thematic analysis: when a research demands coding and closely examining the data to
identify broad themes and patterns.
• Discourse analysis: this method is applied when studying communication and meaning in
relation to their social context.
Step 4: Evaluate and justify your methodological choices
Finally, the researcher should evaluate the chosen methodology. How this can effectively gather
information and data that are vital in answering the research problem. Look closely on the procedure
it involves. Discuss why how this method can be instrumental in making a good result, and show how
this approach contributes new knowledge or understanding.

Process Questions
SAQ (Self-Assessment Question)1: How can you apply the concepts you have learned about
research methodology in solving your personal problems you encounter every day?
SAQ 2: Research methodology is one of the important parts of research that requires intensive
planning and in depth conceptualization, what specific part or aspect about this chapter you find
difficult and challenging?

Let’s Practice! (Answer on your paper.)

Let us write down!

Present a research methodology of your chosen topic of interest following the components
needed in this chapter. It must contain the important concepts and ideas about your research. Choose
one topic of interest from the choices shown below:
a. A qualitative study about students’ perception on the inclusion of ROTC subjects in SHS
Curriculum
b. Students’ awareness on the implementation of “No Assignment Policy”
c. Factors that affect student’s choice of tracks in senior high school
