GCS-E CONTROL SYSTEM OVERVIEW - CONTROLLING IT ALL

1. PURPOSE
Guascor Energy has developed an integrated control system called GCS-E. The purpose of this document is to
introduce the GCS-E control system.

2. WHAT IS A GCS-E?
The new GCS-E replaces previous large control panel with multiple units, each having their own software tools,
into a single control module with a single calibration and configuration software tool. It is a complete integrated
engine control system that uses a hardware platform built with interlocking modules that is mounted directly on the
engine.

It handles all critical control functions and diagnostics in one hardware platform:
l Engine protection control.
l Speed/load control.
l Ignition and timing control.
l Knocking detection.
l Emissions compliance control.
l Auxiliary engine services control (Starter, Water & Oil preheating, pre-lubrication pump).

3. CUSTOMER INTERFACE CONTROL

It allows easy interface with external plant supervisory and control system. It supports the following customer
interface protocols:
l Modbus TCP.
l CAN J1939.
l CANopen.

The user by means of these communication protocols is able to monitor all available sensors, alarms, and the
most important engine variables. The full list of variables is available in other IT.

Analog/digital control interface is always available.

l Analog signals (4-20 mA/ 0-5 VDC) (power setpoint, measured power, speed bias, etc.) and digital signals
(stop, start, etc). Detailed information on other IT.

4. GCS-E ADVANTAGES
Common hardware approach simplifies the control system:
l Ethernet connection possible for remote support. The user is able to connect with a calibration/monitoring tool
installed on a PC to the engine remotely.
l Emails warning reports. The ECU if properly configured can send emails with periodic, alarm, and post-mortem
information to an email account. The user is able to use an available tool to open those files and diagnose
engine operation.
l Detailed diagnostics troubleshooting.
l One hardware platform and single service tool to learn and support.
l GCS-E reduces complexity avoiding expensive customer integration costs.

l Reduces wiring costs and confusion between engine and multiple modules mounted off-engine.
l Island response optimization by means of boost control.
l Automatic pre and post lubrication of the engine done by the ECU depending on the engine model.
l Simplifies installation and commissioning.

5. GCS-E HARDWARE OVERVIEW

The new GCS-E engine control system includes three main components: the complete integrated GCS-E ECU, a
relay power box and a predefined engine harness that provides the customer interface connector.

1. The GCS- E ECU is the brain of the control it is connected directly by

harness to the sensors and ignition coils. The integrated ECU includes the
ignition, knock, AFR and speed/load control.

2. The electrical/relay power box contains some power contactors so that the
ECU can control the lubrication and pumps. The user just need to provide
24vd and three phase AC voltages (400/480vac).

3. Harness + Customer Interface connector : the engine comes with a

harness mounted and a ruggered customer connector for signals like power
measured, start, stop. Etc. When manufactured, the engine is also run with the
electrical harnesses and devices installed on it. The customer will therefore
receive the system installed and tested.

6. GCS-E PROTECTS ENGINE OF FAILURES

Caused by knock
l Advanced knock algorithm allows operating closer to the knock margin without going into knock.
l Better knock detection using FFT signal processing identifies knock events that might be missed with other
techniques.

Caused by misfire
l High energy spark to ignite leaner fuel mixtures and poorer quality fuels.
l Plug Life Indicator lets you know when spark plugs gets close to failing, causing misfire.

Caused by slipping out of emissions compliance

l Advanced air/fuel ration algorithms keeps your engine in emissions compliance.
l Even when fuel quality changes.

7. DIAGNOSTICS AND TRENDING SOFTWARE

All real-time I/O comes to a single platform and are processed together.
