Phys 212 HW 1 Solutions

Question 1 (2/10)

Galilean transformations state that x′ = x − vt, t′ = t, so in the new coordinates: cos(kx − ωt) =
cos(k(x′ + vt) − ωt) = cos(kx − (ω − vk)t) if we want to write it as a sinusoidial with the parameters k ′ and
ω ′ , cos(kx − (ω − vk)t) = cos(k ′ x − ω ′ t), k ′ = k, therefore λ′ = λ and ω ′ = |ω − vk|

Question 2 (2/10)

With Lorentz transformation x′ = γ(x − vt), t′ = γ(t − vx/c2 ), with chain rule, derivations with respect
to unprimed coordinates can be turned into derivations with respect to primed coordinates. In partial
derivatives x and t should be treated as functions of two variables : x′ and t′ . After the partial derivation,
wave equation with primed coordinates arrives.

The Lorentz transformations are stated as

x′ = γ (x − vt) (1)
