Assignment 2
Total Marks: 25 Weighting: 5%
Due Date: Week 10 (Friday – 12th May 2024) Submission: Moodle Dropbox
Note:

• All solutions are to be done in a Spreadsheet e.g. (Microsoft Excel)

• Create new sheets for each question (Name the Sheet with the Question Number)
• Make the solutions neat and presentable.
• Place your Surname, First name, and ID on each Sheet.

Question 1: (12 Marks)

The storage, elevation and outflow data of a reservoir are given below:

Elevation (m) Storage (106)(m3) Outflow Discharge (m3/s)

299.2 4.5 0
299.7 5.2 5
300.2 6.2 12
300.7 6.7 45
301.2 7.2 80
301.7 8.0 120
302.2 8.5 170

The spillway crest is at elevation 299.70 m. The following flood flow is expected into the reservoir.

Time (h) 0.0 3.0 6.0 9.0 12.0 15.0 18.0 21.0 24.0 27.0
Inflow (m3/s) 8.0 15.0 50.0 60.0 50.0 40.0 30.0 20.0 15.0 10.0

The reservoir surface is at elevation 299.20 m at the commencement of the inflow, route the flood
to obtain:
a) the outflow hydrograph and
b) the reservoir elevation vs time curve.

Question 2 (8 Marks)
The following table gives stage-discharge data for a given stream.

Stage (G) Discharge (Q) Stage (G) Discharge (Q)

(m) (m3 /s) (m) (m3 /s)

20.95 150 23.05 830
21.45 270 23.55 1,060
21.80 345 23.85 1,270
22.00 450 24.40 1,350
22.40 540 24.15 1,470
22.75 550 24.55 1,600
22.65 690 24.90 1,810

i. Establish a stage-discharge relationship to predict the stage for a known discharge. Assume the stage value
for zero discharge as 19.50 m.
ii. Determine the stage of the river corresponding to a discharge of 2,500 m3/s.
