INTRODUCTION TO ASTROLOGY
Astrology has an illustrious history – spanning thousands of years and touching
the lives of people on many continents. It is widely believed that the ancient
tradition of Astrology has its roots in Babylon around 3000 BC. Here, as has so
often been the case in human history, man looked upward to the heavens in an
attempt to understand the world and his place in it.
This upward gaze drew the Babylonians to the discovery that it took twelve
lunar cycles, or months, for the sun to make a full rotation. On its journey the
sun passed through twelve different constellations of stars.

It was noted that the appearance of each of these constellations in the night sky
occurred at the same time every year and coincided with the progress of the
changing seasons. Early astrologers named the twelve constellations
accordingly. For example, the constellation visible during the rainy season was
aptly named Aquarius or “water bearer”. In this way the stars became a way of
recording time, making it possible – even desirable – to consult them on such
matters as when to plant crops or travel.
Perhaps more important from a modern astrological point of view was the desire
set in motion by the Babylonians to understand the relationship between celestial
bodies and earthly events. It was the passage of the sun, moon and planets
through the twelve constellations as they were seen from earth that formed the
basis of the Zodiac, which is Greek for “circle of animals”. The signs of the
Zodiac, or Sun Signs, correspond to the time of year in which the sun was
believed to reside in a given constellation.

Today Astrology makes use of a symbolic Zodiac based on the calendar year
rather than strictly adhering to the movement of the sun. It is divided into twelve
equal parts despite the fact that the sun does not spend equal time in each
constellation.
Each sign of the Zodiac is influenced by the energy of a ruling planet and is
grouped according to one of the four elements of life|: Earth, Water, Air or Fire.
For example, Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn are all Earth signs.
Modern Astrology is based on a study of the influence which each of the seven
original planets has on our characters. The Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars,
Jupiter and Saturn each govern one aspect of the personality. If one knows the
exact date, time and location of their birth, a natal chart can create a detailed,
personal analysis. Thanks to modern software programs, this is a fairly
straightforward procedure. Sun-sign Astrology is a simplified system which
looks at the basic personality profile associated with each of the Zodiac signs.

Today, you would be hard pressed to find a person who is not aware of the signs
of the Zodiac. This invasion of astronomy into popular culture attests to our
thirst for knowledge about ourselves. As the Ancients looked at the position of
the planets to establish a relationship between these and events on earth, so
modern Astrologers examine Sun signs in an effort to understand character.

While the Science of Astronomy maps planetary movements in an exacting way,

the Art of Astrology concerns itself with the interpretation. Thus, Psychology
may actually trace its roots to this ancient tradition. Why do we seem to connect
so seamlessly with some people yet seem always to be at loggerheads with
others? Where should we begin to look for fulfilling work? Who would make a
good partner? A good friend? Familiarizing ourselves with Sun-signs may be a
good place to start on a quest to understand ourselves and those around us.
THE CANCER SIGN
Cancer women can be a bit of a contradiction. They crave emotional connections
with other people but sometimes hold themselves aloof. They have a strong
sense of family but tend to marry later in life. But if you get to know her, a
Cancer woman can be your best friend, your strongest ally, and your ideal wife.

Water Element

Cancer is ruled by the element of Water. The Water element controls emotion
and intuition. Cancer women have a tendency to appear very emotionally-driven,
especially to more practical signs like Taurus and Virgo. Cancer women often
have very strong intuition, especially when it comes to sensing deception.
The natural intuition of a Cancer woman is very closely keyed to working with
people, so while Cancer may sometimes forget where she put her keys, she's
unlikely to misunderstand social and emotional cues of those around her.

Cardinal Signs

In astrology, the Cardinal signs begin things, the Fixed signs maintain them, and
the Mutable signs change them. Cancer may seem shy, but she has the makings
of a natural-born leader. Cancer seldom seeks the spotlight and tends to be most
comfortable in a supporting role, but she is the trusted advisor and often serves
as the "woman behind the throne."

Moon

Cancer is ruled by the Moon, the beautiful woman of mystery and sensuality.
Cancer is sensuous, but probably wouldn't describe herself as sexy. Just as the
Moon reflects the light of the Sun, Cancer women like to reflect the light of
those around them.
An affinity for the Moon also means that Cancer may feel the phases of the
Moon very strongly, so she may find that her moods and energy levels
correspond to lunar phases: full Moons make her happy and energetic, while
dark Moons make her sad and lethargic.
TRAITS OF THE CANCER WOMAN
Of all the signs for women, Cancer is the one that most embodies the traditional
feminine role. Cancer women are loving, loyal, nurturing, and monogamous.
This can create problems in modern hook-up culture, as Cancer will never be
truly fulfilled with casual sex and one-night stands. Cancer craves a deeper
connection.

The Cancer woman makes an outstanding mother, especially with young

children. Cancer women tend to be very domestic, and Cancer women usually
love to cook and don't mind cleaning. Cancer's domesticity stems from a desire
to create a nice "nest". A Cancer woman's home is not sterile or showy, but
comfortable and neat. Cancer women do their best when they have a comfortable
and safe home to rejuvenate themselves in.

Cancer may sometimes seem shy, but shyness itself is not a Cancer trait. They
don't crave social abundant social connections, but they do require a few close
friends or family members. Cancer women make wonderful sisters, and with a
supportive and nurturing mother they develop great relationships. Unfortunately,
Cancer women who are older siblings often become "little mothers", and
sometimes resent that their childhoods were spent as surrogate parents to their
siblings, especially if their own mother was neglectful or absent.

In their youth, Cancer women are often people-pleasers. They crave close
emotional connections and will sometimes put up with mistreatment in order to
maintain the relationship. However, Cancer women become more assertive as
they age, especially when children are born. Cancer women tend to be very
protective of their children and husbands, and they will even become aggressive
when someone they love is threatened.

Children of Cancer mothers are likely to have a rebellious phase in the early teen
years, as Cancer mothers can sometimes tend to be smothering. The young teen
interprets this as infantilizing and rebels, so Cancer mothers may have to learn
new skills in order to communicate with a growing child.
THE CANCER WOMAN AND ROMANCE
Cancer women have a tendency to marry later in life. A Cancer woman is not
looking for a hook-up, but for a marriage and a family and a lifelong
commitment. Younger, more immature men are sometimes turned off by this
rush to the altar, but older, more mature men are often looking for the same
thing.

Cancer communicates emotionally, and due to the frequent shyness that Cancer
women exhibit, it can be very difficult for them to stand up for themselves.
Cancer women may not always be completely honest about their intentions, and
they can sometimes find themselves staying in relationships that aren't good for
them because the pain of ending the relationship would be too great.

Cancer women require a strong emotional bond with a close friend or family
member, and they have a tendency to bond strongly with a prospective mate. If
that relationship fails, it may be difficult for the Cancer woman to recover, but
her recovery is greatly enhanced by having a best friend who can support her.

Cancer women tend to fall into two categories: the lifelong married woman or
the serial monogamist. Because Cancer women seldom have casual
relationships, and because they have very high standards for how they envision a
functional family operating, they may have a tendency to marry too soon and
later be disappointed. While the Cancer woman seldom leaves a relationship, she
may be the partner who is abandoned if her choice in a mate is not a right one.

The best Cancer marriages are the ones in which a close friend or family
member was instrumental in the early phases of the relationship. Cancer women
moving toward marriage have a tendency to view their prospective mate through
rose-colored lenses, and an objective friend or family member can provide a
much-needed reality check. Cancer women do exceptionally well with more
traditional "courtship" arrangements than dating, and they often fall into long-
term relationships as a result of a friend's matchmaking. Because Cancer is such
a wonderful friend and so beloved by her friends, they will work diligently to
find someone who is a good match for their Cancer friend.
THE CANCER WOMAN AND COMPATIBILITY IN LOVE

CANCER AND ARIES

Aries men tend to be impulsive, and they tend to be natural leaders. Aries can be
a bit domineering, and Cancer women must be careful not to bruise his ego.
More mature and well-balanced Aries men can be a good match for Cancer
women, helping to defend her when she's hurt and taking a strong sense of
responsibility for her, but younger Aries men are often too impulsive and
inconsiderate to make a strong match for Cancer.

CANCER AND TAURUS

Taurus men are steady and stable, and most of them develop into very family-
oriented men who are fiercely protective of their wives and children. Because
they tend to be stable, they make a great match for Cancer women who are a bit
more likely to "go with the flow."
Taurus men benefit greatly from the nurturance and support of the Cancer
woman, and this has the potential to be a beautiful long-term relationship. Both
share similar tastes in the bedroom, and as long as both parties can keep their
natural possessiveness in check, this match makes for beautiful marriages.

CANCER AND GEMINI

Gemini men have a tendency toward infidelity, and they seldom tolerate or
understand possessive or jealous behavior from their partners. They crave
freedom, whereas Cancer requires stability.
Geminis communicate exceptionally well on an intellectual basis, but they often
have no understanding of the more emotional communication style of Cancer.
Worse of all, both signs can have a tendency to be a bit unstable, and this can
cause financial and career problems for both parties.

CANCER AND CANCER

Cancer-Cancer relationships can be a beautiful union! They can also be
disastrous. Both partners understand one another, communicate well, bond for
life, and have emotional depths that few others can understand.
However, the partners in a Cancer-Cancer match may have great difficulty if one
partner has children from a previous marriage, especially if the parent is a
mother. Cancer-Cancer matches may also have some challenges with career
advancement, as both have their hearts centered on the home and hearth.

CANCER AND LEO

Cancer and Leo can be a pretty good match. Leo men need constant ego-
stroking, and Cancer women excel at providing support and encouragement. The
biggest issue in this relationship is that Leo likes to be admired by all, and so
Cancer women can sometimes feel left out.
Leo is more likely to enjoy parties than staying home and snuggling on the
couch, and Leo is loved by all, which means Cancer may become jealous of Leo.
This is one of the few matches where the man doesn't need to be older, but the
Cancer woman probably should be. A Cancer woman who has hobbies, interests,
friends, and aspirations of her own is less likely to be smothering to Leo.

CANCER AND VIRGO

Virgo men provide an outstanding "opposites attract" counterpoint to Cancer.
Virgo is practical, great with money, and at least picks up his dirty socks! Virgo
loves long-term relationships, a pleasant home environment, and has little need
for parties or other loud social gatherings.
Virgo is intensely protective toward his children, and by extension of that the
mother or future mother of his children. Virgo and Cancer are the two most
faithful and monogamous zodiac signs. Both signs do have a tendency to be a bit
critical; Cancer will get passive-aggressive and Virgo will nag.

CANCER AND LIBRA

Libra men are charming, witty, and genial. They do wonderfully on first
impressions, so it's not uncommon for Cancer women to fall head over heels for
a Libra man. Unfortunately, Libra and Cancer live in two different worlds.
Cancer is emotional, while Libra is intellectual.
Cancer is a homebody, and Libra likes to be surrounded by a circle of friends.
Long-term relationships between these two may look great on the surface, but
beneath there are often grave problems.

CANCER AND SCORPIO

Scorpio and Cancer both tend to be very private people, although Scorpio often
pretends to be much more sociable than he actually is. Scorpio and Cancer are
both intensely emotional, and they can communicate on an emotional level better
than most other signs.
This can be a great match, but Scorpio and Cancer both have a tendency to
repress their feelings and to avoid confrontation, so without a focus on open
communication, problems can crop up that may not be resolved. Younger
Scorpio men may avoid commitment, so stick with more mature and settled
Scorpios.

CANCER AND SAGITTARIUS

Sagittarius men are honest to a fault, open with their problems, and a bit obtuse
when it comes to dealing with Cancer's more sensitive, emotional nature.
Sagittarius might make an excellent professional mentor or older brother to a
Cancer, but Cancer will not like hearing Sagittarius's criticisms and concerns
often enough to remain in a relationship with him. The two simply don't know
how to communicate on the same level.

CANCER AND CAPRICORN

Cancer and Capricorn have a great time in the bedroom! However, Capricorn
takes longer to warm up to a new partner than Cancer, and Cancer may
misinterpret this as disinterest. Both parties can be extremely stubborn, and
Capricorn has a tendency to be far more ambitious and career-oriented than
Cancer.
This relationship can be extremely successful, but only if the Cancer woman is
older, more secure, and has a strong network of friends that can provide her with
companionship and emotional support when her Capricorn is working late again.

CANCER AND AQUARIUS

If you're looking for someone to pay attention to you, Aquarius is probably not
the best match. Aquarius has his head in the clouds, more concerned with mental
and spiritual issues than with relating to real people.
Aquarius also values freedom, so he's not a great option for a Cancer seeking a
lifelong mate. Cancer is likely to feel neglected, and they don't communicate
well with one another because their brainwaves seem to be on entirely different
planes of existence.

CANCER AND PISCES

Cancer and Pisces can work well together, but it's a better match if Cancer is a
bit older and Pisces is a bit younger. Pisces and Cancer both tend to be very
emotionally intense, and they both prefer the life of a homebody to that of a
party animal.
Pisces can sometimes be a little TOO intense, but Cancer's nurturing and support
is wonderful for helping Pisces to recover. Pisces is one of the few signs that can
handle Cancer's emotions, and Pisces and Cancer share strong intuition. In a
Pisces-Cancer match, money and financial standing may be a challenge.
THE CANCER WOMAN AND FRIENDSHIP
Cancer women aren't popular. In their childhood and youth, they may even be
painfully shy. They're not intellectual introverts but emotional introverts. Cancer
children should be encouraged to learn public speaking, as it helps them
tremendously in social areas.

Cancer women are nurturing and gentle, always there as a shoulder for their
friends to cry on, and Cancer women are the first people you should call if you
just had a break-up with a boyfriend. Cancer women are consistent, and they will
put their own needs and desires on the back-burner if a friend needs help.
They're intensely loyal and very protective of their friends and families.

Most of the Cancer's traits in friendship are so natural that it's difficult for her to
understand people without those same traits. Fair-weather friendships and
betrayal from a trusted friend can be extremely painful for the Cancer woman,
and just as in romance, a Cancer woman may remain in a friendship longer than
she should to avoid the pain of leaving.
CAREER CHOICES FOR THE CANCER WOMAN
Cancer women are wonderful nurturers, and they do a fabulous job of teaching,
particularly in the early grades. Cancer women are the ones who can handle an
entire classroom of pre-schoolers without losing their minds, and they have the
patience of saints, especially with small children.

Cancer women do very well when working with animals, too. Their calming
influence affects animals as well as children, so working with a veterinarian or in
veterinary medicine would be a great career choice for them. Working with
animal shelters and rescues might be a passion for them, but these settings can
often have a lot of things that might leave Cancer sad and disappointed.

When it comes to healthcare, Cancer women make outstanding nurses. More

mature or experienced Cancer women can work just about anywhere, but newer
Cancer nurses will probably want to stay away from oncology, hospice, and
neonatal intensive care. Cancer women have difficulty maintaining a
professional distance, and if one of their patients dies, they often feel it very
intensely, especially if they're new to the healthcare profession. Cancer nurses do
great in emergency medicine, as they tend to calm everyone around them, and
they're wonderful with pediatrics.

At the end of the day, a Cancer woman's heart is for her own home and for her
own family or future family. Cancer women would be wise to consider choosing
a career that fits their needs and desires for a family. Careers which will
accommodate the "Mommy Track" are a good fit for them, whereas careers that
are more intense and all-consuming may be abandoned once children come
along. Careers that are location-independent may be a good option for Cancer,
because the Cancer woman may wind up following a husband's career once she
is married.
THE CANCER WOMAN AND HEALTH
Cancer women have a tendency to be somewhat frail, so maintaining muscular
and skeletal strength with resistance training must be a priority of Cancer.
Solitary activities like jogging or swimming will suit Cancer nicely, and
swimming is often a favorite of Cancer and other water signs. Cancer is not a fan
of competitive activities, but team activities might suit Cancer well, particularly
in sports like volleyball that are traditionally more feminine activities. In any
event, Cancer is usually not a fitness nut, so she may have to work exceptionally
hard to maintain physical condition and ability.

Cancer women may be prone to depression and anxiety disorders, and these
symptoms can become even more pronounced when they have children. Cancer
women may be more prone to neurological problems, although there is no
evidence to suggest that they have greater rates of epilepsy or MS. Cancer
women are more likely to suffer from migraine headaches, and these are often
triggered by dietary issues. Cancer women can greatly reduce their frequency of
headaches by avoiding red wine and monosodium glutamate (MSG).

Cancer women often have very particular digestive systems that respond angrily
when they eat something that doesn't agree with them. They're not normally very
adventurous eaters, although this is not a matter of personal preference but of
experience with food-related digestive upsets. A Cancer woman will not
generally enjoy spicy or heavily seasoned foods, as these can cause heartburn
and acid reflux.
