1. Scope of Work
1.1 The following method statement describes the procedures, sequence of works and safety
precaution for carrying out bamboo scaffolding, concrete spalling repair & lourve replacement.
1.2 This text gives a general guideline for the execution of the works.
1.3 Details of the procedures contained herein may be reviewed periodically and modified based on
the actual site conditions.
1.4 The principal methods described in the following sections will be subject to review during actual
execution of the works and may be amended if so required. Any revisions to this method
statement shall be submitted to HKU Engineering for approval prior to implementation.
1.5 All proprietary materials shall be used strictly in accordance with the materials manufacturer’s
instruction and/or recommendations.

2. General Method & Working Sequence of Constructions

Preparation Work
2.1 Fence off the working area by safety barrier underneath the site area. (Refer to photos)
2.2 Install the independent lifelines from R/F to affected area of external wall prior bamboo
scaffolding erection.
2.3 All eye bolts shall be checked and certified ay a competent person.
2.4 Take back the lifelines by a long hook from internal room area, the bamboo scaffolders must
wear a full body safety harness with independent lifeline prior go out to external wall.
2.5 Provide & erect suitable worker access & bamboo working platform to affected area of external
wall.

Spalling Repair Work (For Location A, B & D)

Surface Preparation
2.6 Attention to the full and proper preparation of the substrate is essential for complete repair
adhesion.
2.7 Mark out the affected area, then cut back the edge of the repair to a minimum depth of 10 mm.
2.8 Break out the repair area to remove all contaminated or damaged concrete to a minimum depth
of 10 mm, up to the pre-cut edge of the repair.
2.9 Fully expose any corroded reinforcement in the repair area and continue until un-corroded steel
is reached.

2.10 Oil and grease deposits are best removed by steam cleaning, detergent scrubbing, or the use of a
proprietary degreaser.
2.11 The steel bars should be cleaned to a uniform bright condition and the edge of the repair should
be ‘roughened’ to provide a good mechanical key at the substrate interface.

Reinforcement Priming
2.12 Exposed steel reinforcement should be securely held in place to avoid movement during the
application, as this will affect the compaction and bond of the material.
2.13 Apply one full, unbroken coat of approved priming and allow drying before continuing. If unsure
about the continuity of the coating, apply a second coat and allow drying.
Substrate Priming – water (standard repairs)
2.14 Priming with water should take place after the erection of the formwork.
2.15 Several hours prior to placing the approved substrate primer, the prepared concrete substrates
should be saturated, by filling the formwork.
Mixing and Application of polymer modified reinstatement mortar
2.16 Mixing and application shall strictly follow the approved product data.
2.17 If sagging occurs on vertical or overhead faces, the compound must be completely removed.
2.18 The substrate must be reprised and compounded and then reapplied in layers of reduced
thickness.
2.19 Multiple layers can also be used to achieve the desired thickness and profile but care must be
taken to ensure consistency of inter-coat bond strength.
2.20 Where multiple layers are to be applied, the surface of intermediate layers should be
‘scratch-keyed’ and cured with wet hessian. Further applications of the fresh compound may be
applied once the intermediate layer has reached its initial set.
2.21 It can be finished by striking off with a straight edge and closing with a steel or plastic float.
2.22 Damp sponges or plastic floats may be used to achieve the desired surface texture, but care
should again be taken not to overwork the surface.
2.23 Curing of repaired areas should be carried out as soon as possible after the surface has been
closed.
2.24 Approved curing compound should be spray applied in accordance with its current data sheet
instructions.
3. Lourve Replacement Work (For Location C)
3.1 Take down & cart away existing defective lourve.
3.2 Ensure the wall opening clearance prior new lourve installation.

3.3 Mark the location to the opening for new lourve installation.
3.4 Apply caulk to the opening and firmly set the new lourve in place.
3.5 Locate and anchor clip angles 1.5" x 1.5" x 12 gauge x 2" long (38 x 38 x 2.75 x 51) as required
to establish proper louver depth and position. See Fig. 2.1 for required spacing for stationary and
operable louvers.
3.6 Place the louver section into the opening.
3.7 Shim around the perimeter of the louver to maintain the proper sealant joint clearance and to
level the louver.
3.8 When the louver is level and in the proper position, fasten louver frame to clip angles with
screws.
3.9 Louvers shall be installed with wire mesh/plastic cover for protection from entering foreign
objects or debris.
3.10 Install backer rod and caulk around the entire perimeter of the louver.

5. Precautionary & Safety Measures

5.1 Fence off the working area, unauthorized entry is prohibited.
5.2 Use bamboo working platform for work at heights of external wall.
5.3 Use appropriate PPE, such as dust masks and safety glasses.
5.4 Worker must wear a safety harness with fall arrestor during work of external wall.
5.5 Check electrical appliances before use. Repair or replace damaged/ faulty parts immediately.
