SHORT ANSWER TYPE QUESTIONS I
6 2
Given,

Mass=4kg,3kg,2kg
F=14N
Since 14N is applied on the total mass(m) =4+3+2=9 kg

𝐹 = 𝑚×𝑎
𝐹
𝑎= 𝑚
14
𝑎= 9
Therefore 3 kg also moves with 1.5 m/s2
Thus the net force Fnet=m×a=3×1.5=4.5 N

7 Derive the second equation of motion: 𝑠 = 𝑢𝑡 +
1 2
𝑎𝑡 , where the symbols 2
2
have usual meanings.
We have to prove the second equation of motion
Let the distance travelled by the body be “s”.
We know that
Distance = Average velocity × Time
𝑣−𝑢
Also, Average velocity = 2
So we can write
𝑣−𝑢
∴ Distance(t)= 2
×𝑡 . . . . eq. (1)
From the first equation of motion
We know that:
v = u + at
substituting this value of “v” in eq.(1), we get
𝑢+𝑢+𝑎𝑡
𝑠= 2
×𝑡
2𝑢+𝑎𝑡
𝑠= 2
×𝑡
Or,
2𝑢 1 2
𝑠= 2
𝑡+ 2
a𝑡
Or,
1 2
𝑠 = 𝑢𝑡 + 2

8 i. An aircraft needs air because air moving under the wings of aircraft is 2
strong enough to hold it up and air is also required to burn the fuel in
aircraft engines. Since there is no air on moon, an aircraft cannot fly on
moon.
ii. In order to pull the cart horse pushes the ground with its foot in the
backward direction by pressing the ground. As a reaction of this force,
the ground pushes the horse in forward direction. As a result the cart is
pulled by the horse in the forward direction

9 a. The tendency of an object to resist changes in its state of motion varies 2

with mass. Mass is that quantity that is solely dependent upon the inertia
of an object. The more inertia that an object has, the more mass that it
has. A more massive object has a greater tendency to resist changes in
its state of motion.
b. Newton's third law of motion can be used to explain the rotation of water
sprinklers used on grass lawns. When water sprays from a sprinkler, it
exerts an equal and opposite force on the sprinkler, causing it to rotate.

SHORT ANSWER TYPE QUESTIONS II

10 A ball of 100 gm is dropped from a tower of 45 m height.
a. Calculate the velocity of the ball when it is about to reach the ground.
b. How much time will it take to reach the ground?
c. How much force will be exerted by the ball when it hits the ground it?
Page 2 of 8
Given :
Mass of the ball= 100 gm= 0.1 kg
Initial velocity of the ball(u)= 0 m/s
Final velocity of the ball (v) =? 1
Distance (s) = 450 m
Acceleration due to gravity= 10 m/s

Using third equation of motion:

2 2
𝑣 − 𝑢 = 2𝑎𝑠

2 2
𝑣 − 0 = 2×45×10
2
𝑣 = 900 1
𝑣 = 30𝑚/𝑠
According to first equation of motion:
𝑣 = 𝑢 + 𝑎𝑡
𝑣−𝑢
𝑡= 𝑎
30−0
𝑡= 10
𝑡 = 3𝑠
1
Force exerted by the ball on the ground= 𝑚 ×a
0. 1 × 10
1N
So the Maximum velocity of the ball before hitting the ground= 30 m/s
Time taken to reach the ground = 3 s
Force exerted by ball on the ground= 1 N

11 Two bodies have masses in the ratio 4:5. When a force is applied on first body, it
moves with an acceleration of 10 m/s2. How much acceleration will the same
force produce in the other body?
Let us consider the two masses as 4x and 5 x respectively. 1
Given acceleration of first body as 10 m/s2.
F= m×a
F=4x×10=40 x
1
As we are applying same force for the second body,
40x=5x×a
⇒a=40/5=8 m/s2.
Hence acceleration is 8 m/s2

a. While catching a fast moving cricket ball, a fielder in the ground gradually 1
12
pulls his hand backward because by doing this, he increases the time in
which the velocity of ball will become zero. Thus, the rate of change of
Page 3 of 8
momentum will be large and less force will be exerted by the ball on the 1
hand of the fielder.
b. An athlete runs before jumping to gain momentum because it helps in
jumping higher and longer because of the inertia of motion gained due to
motion. When the athletes jump, they already have a forward motion that 1
would be greater than that of a jump made from standing in one spot.
c. According to Newton's third law of motion, for every action, there is an
equal and opposite reaction. When the man jumps from a boat, he
applies force on the boat due to which boat moves backward. An
equal force is exerted by the boat on the man which helps the man to
jump out of the boat.

LONG ANSWER TYPE QUESTIONS

13 a. A driver takes 0.20s to apply the brakes after he sees a need for it. This is 5
called
the reaction time of the driver. If he is driving a car at a speed of 54km/h
and
The brakes cause a deceleration of 5.0m/s2 , find the distance travelled by
the car after he sees the need to put the brakes on.
The speed of the car= 54 km/hour
= 54× 5/18
=15 m/s
Reaction time= 0.20 seconds
The distance travelled by the car during reaction time= speed× time
= 15×0.20
=3m
When the brakes are applied:
Initial velocity= 25m/s
Final velocity= 0 m/s
Rate of deceleration= -5 m/s2
Distance travelled= ?
According to third law of motion:

2 2
𝑣 − 𝑢 = 2𝑎𝑠
2 2
𝑣 −𝑢
𝑠= 2𝑎

2 2
0 −15
𝑠= 2×−5

−225
𝑠= −10

𝑠 = 22. 5 𝑚

Page 4 of 8
So the total distance travelled by the car when the driver sees the need to
stop it= 22.5m + 3 m= 25.5 m
b. A racing car attains a speed of 180 km/hour in 30 seconds. Find the
acceleration and distance covered by the car in this time.
Given:
Initial velocity (u)= 0m/s
Final velocity (v) = 180 km/hour
= 50 m/s
Time taken= 30 s
𝑣−𝑢
So acceleration= 𝑡
50−0
= 30
= 50/30
=1.66 m/s2
1 2
Distance travelled (s) = 𝑢𝑡 + 2
𝑎𝑡
1 2
0×30 + 2
×1. 66×(30)
= 747 m

8 Physical Changes: When the burner is switched on the liquid petroleum gas gets 1
converted in to its gaseous state.
Chemical Change : The burning of the gas is a chemical change. 1
9 Explain why:
a. During summer due to high temperature, the gas in the tyre 1
expands. Due to which, volume increases and pressure
decreases. As there is a puncture in the tyre, so gas gets the path to
come out. So, in summer the punctured tyre becomes flat easily than in
winter. 1
b. There is no rise in temperature when there is a change in state of matter.
When a substance undergoes a change of state when it is heated, the
heat is absorbed by the particles of that substance. This is called latent
heat, and it is because of this process that the temperature does not rise
at all..

SHORT ANSWER TYPE QUESTIONS II

10 a. Evaporation is slower, occurs only from the surface of the liquid, does not 1
produce bubbles, and leads to cooling. Boiling is faster, can occur
throughout the liquid, produces lots of bubbles, and does not result in
cooling. 1
b. Evaporation 1
c. Evaporation depends on temperature, climate and humidity. In sunny day
the air is hot so the more moisture it can generally hold as compared to
rainy day [the air is saturated]. So this is the reason why washed clothes
dry up more quickly on a hot summer day than on a rainy day.

11 a. When atmospheric pressure increases, the boiling point becomes higher, 1

and when atmospheric pressure decreases (as it does when elevation
increases), the boiling point becomes lower.
b. Particles of benzene vapors are more energetic because of benzene 1
vapours have gained extra energy in the form of latent heat of
vaporisation. Hence it is more energetic.
c. This observation indicates that particles of water have spaces between 1
them into which sugar particles fit.?

12 a. When a saturated solution of copper sulphate at above room temperature 1

is allowed to cool, the solution becomes super-saturated and in the
absence of stirring or the return of the previous solution temperature, the
solute starts to precipitate out. i.e., crystal formation occurs..

Page 6 of 8
b. The solution will pass through an ordinary filter paper without 1
leaving any residue as the size of the particles is too small to be
stopped by the filter paper. 1
c. When iron filings and sulphur powder are mixed and heated, they
undergo a chemical reaction and form ferrous sulphide (FeS).
