Assignment question.
Premise
In Malaysia, the first language is Bahasa Melayu and most people understand the
standard Malay spoken in formal transactions. The beauty of Malaysia is that there are
so many other languages and cultures which contributes to diversity among Malaysians.
The article above discusses the concept of culture in the context of the Sapir-Whorf
hypothesis in the domain of colours.
An understanding of this diversity is essential if we are to be able to teach Malaysians
properly.

Question 1
How do the different Malaysian languages (and their associated cultures) literally and
metaphorically conceptualise colours? Discuss comparatively.
(1000 to 1500 words)
(30 marks)
Question 2
How will the differences be discussed in Question 1 affect language teaching in the
Malaysian schools (private and public)?
(1000 to 1500 words)
(30 marks)
