THE ROLE OF LOAD FLOW ANALYSIS TOWARDS SELECTION OF

THE RATING OF CAPACITOR BANKS-A CASE STUDY

Let us Consider a 33/11 KV Sub-station with 2 × 10 𝑀𝑉𝐴 Capacity. The Source 33 KV
feeder is drawn with ACSR DOG Conductor having a length of 10 𝐾𝑀

Present Apparent Load: 𝑆1 = 16.97 𝑀𝑉𝐴

Present Power Factor 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜑1 = 0.825(𝑙𝑎𝑔)
Present Active Load: 𝑃 = 𝑆1 × 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜑1 = 16.97 × 0.825 = 14𝑀𝑊

Present Reactive Load: 𝑄1 = 𝑆1 × 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜑1 = 16.97 × √1 − 0.8252 = 9.59 𝑀𝑉𝐴𝑟

The Desired Power Factor: 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜑2 = 0.95(𝑙𝑎𝑔)
𝑃 14
The Apparent Load at the desired Power Factor: 𝑆2 = 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜑 = 0.95 = 14.74𝑀𝑉𝐴
2

The Reactive Load Now: 𝑄2 = 𝑆2 × 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜑2 = 14.74 × √1 − 0.952 = 4.6 𝑀𝑉𝐴𝑟

So, the Rating of the Capacitor Bank: 𝑄𝐶 = 𝑄1 − 𝑄2 = 9.59 − 4.6 = 4.99𝑀𝑉𝐴𝑟
So, the Value of 𝑄𝐶 may be Chosen as: 5 𝑀𝑉𝐴𝑟

Surprisingly, it is found that the Capacitor bank is delivering a reactive Power of
4.22 𝑀𝑉𝐴𝑟 only instead of 5 𝑀𝑉𝐴𝑟.
Since, the Capacitor bank is a Constant Impedance Type Load, if the reactance of the
Capacitor bank is 𝑋𝐶 and the Bus Voltage is 𝑉𝑏 , we may write that
𝑉𝑏2
𝑄𝐶 =
𝑋𝐶
Now, the Rated Bus Voltage : 𝑉𝑏,𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 = 11𝐾𝑉

The Rating of the Capacitor Bank: 𝑄𝐶,𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 = 5𝑀𝑉𝐴𝑟

Now, the actual Bus Voltage as a Result of Power Flow: 𝑉𝑎𝑐𝑡 = 10.1𝐾𝑉
If the Actual Reactive Power Compensation is 𝑄𝐶,𝑎𝑐𝑡 ,

2
𝑄𝐶,𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 𝑉𝑏,𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑
= 2
𝑄𝐶,𝑎𝑐𝑡 𝑉𝑎𝑐𝑡
2
𝑉𝑎𝑐𝑡 10.1 2
So, 𝑄𝐶,𝑎𝑐𝑡 = 𝑄𝐶,𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 × (𝑉 ) = 5 × ( 11 ) = 4.22𝑀𝑉𝐴𝑟
𝑏,𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑

So, the Capacitor bank will be under-utilized. This incident makes Load Flow Study
an indispensable tool towards selection of the Capacitor bank and study its effect under
different loading Conditions. Load flow Analysis should be used after manual calculation for
fine tuning towards Capacitor Bank sizing with multi-stage APFC (Automatic Power Factor
Correction) scheme.
