Le Parisien is a sample library for Kontakt that features three different and unique accordion
models:
• Rouge (Chordox).
• Noir (Frontalini).
• Blanc (Valetta).
The accordions were played by Martí Cifre and recorded by Jaume Trobat at Calma Estudis in
Mallorca. Le Parisien runs in the full version of Kontakt.
THE LIBRARY
RECORDING SESSION
Le Parisien was recorded using 3 microphone perspectives:
• Close: Royer 121 ribbon mic.
• Mid: Pair of AKG 414.
• Far: Pair of Neumann U47.
FEATURES
Le Parisien offers supreme sound quality, and the features couldn't be less than that, so we
remade the script to let you control any single parameter that you may wish.
• 3 accordions multi-sampled with all the available registers.
• Full microphone mixer with purge/load controls for each microphone, mute / solo, volume, width,
pan and output selection for mixing the different channels in your DAW.
• Effects page in which you can add any of the included 23 DSP effects including: convolution
with 30+ custom impulses, EQ, compression, chorus, flanger, tape simulation, transient shaper
and many more into each mic channel and into the master bus independently.
• Sequencer page that lets you control the automatic accompaniment rhythms of the accordion.
• Settings page with up to 6 selectable number of round robins, dynamic range and fully
customisable velocity parameters. Release, air and physical keyboard noises and register
volumes. Envelope control for each articulation.
• Complete support for the sustain pedal.
• Animated 3D rendered GUI for the best user experience and inspiration.
REQUIREMENTS
Since this library is not powered by Kontakt, you need the full version of Kontakt 5.7.3 or newer in
order to load it without restriction. Kontakt Player Free will load the library but you’ll have to restart
it every 15/30 minutes.
INSTALLATION
You’ll find three .nki files inside the Instruments folder, each one is a different accordion model.
There are two methods for loading the library: drag and drop the .nki files into Kontakt’s interface,
or you can browse this same file using Kontakt’s built-in browser.
The “Add library” function is not available because it’s only for “powered by Kontakt” libraries,
libraries encrypted for Kontakt Player.
If you don’t see the whole mapping in the keyboard, adjust the octave offset to 0.
MAIN
This is the main view that will appear when you first load the library.
On the top section there’s the dynamics control selector that can be set to Velocity or Mod Wheel:
• Velocity mode uses the played MIDI velocity to control the dynamic response of the instrument.
• Mod Wheel mode uses the CC1 value to determine the dynamics to be played, useful to have a
finer control over the sound and adds the possibility to create crescendos and diminuendos.
All accordions have usually more than one register that can be changed to select certain reeds
and change its sound. These can usually be selected individually or combined in various ways to
provide a range of different timbres. On the lower section the register can be selected, which were
individually recorded and will be purged when not used in order to save resources.
From the menu bar in the bottom you can select the different pages.
Le Parisien comes with a very advanced script for handling audio effects. You can insert any effect
in any order you want at any mic position and in the master bus.
From the top module you only have to click on the slot you want to insert the effect and a menu
will appear displaying the list of available effects: EQ, compressor, bus compressor, feedback
compressor, limiter, transient shaper, convolution, reverb, delay, phaser, chorus, flanger, lo-fi, tape,
saturation, distortion, skreamer, Marsh J amp, Twang amp, rotator, cabinet, stereo and gain.
Select the effect you want to insert and the correspondent module will be placed in the effects
pool. You can't have the same effect twice. If you have more than 4 effects loaded some of them
will be placed outside the pool range, in that case you can use the scroll placed on the right of the
page.
Using the mint green keys, located chromatically between F-1 and E1, the user can play Major,
Minor and 7th chords (Noir doesn’t include 7th chords) in any inversion and the sequencer will
identify and play the chord following the selected pattern. The library includes 10 pre-defined
patterns but you can customise and save your custom patterns as well.
We have included the most common patterns for you, and they can be selected with the presets
knob, but feel free to create your own ones. The top array of lights will show the position of the
sequencer.
The sequencer cells are (from top to bottom):
• Full chord.
• 5th note of the chord.
• 3rd note of the chord.
• Fundamental note of the chord.
ROUND ROBIN
Round Robin, also known as 'repetitions per key', is a technique to avoid the so-called "machine-
gun effect". When a musician plays an instrument, he/she doesn't play the exact same note twice.
Even if he/she tries very hard, the results won't ever be exactly the same. In samples, if we had no
round robin, you would play the same sample over and over again, creating an artificial sounding
instrument. In theory, the bigger number of round robins (variations) the better and more realistic
the overall sound will be.
We used a technique known as 'neighbour borrowing', implemented in a dedicated script that
cycles over a counter and alternates between the real note that you played, a note below and note
above. Let's say, for example, that you play the note E3. The first time it will play the corresponding
E3 sample. The second time it will play D#3 and tune it 1 semitone up. The third time it will play F3
and tune it 1 semitone down. That’s a very powerful method to create variation to the instrument
and make it sound more real and natural.
Le Parisien was sampled using 2 true round robins, and extended to 6 using the neighbour-
borrowing technique.
DYNAMIC RANGE
All samples were normalised to 0dB, then the velocity curve directly affects the volume of each
sample. This knobs sets how much the velocity affects it. At 0% all samples will be played at 0dB,
at 100% a full volume scale will be applied with the lowest samples silent.
By default, the velocity curve is linear, meaning that the velocity you play is the velocity that will be
taken internally to process the midi notes. But maybe you want to change it so the library plays soft
even if you play hard in your keyboard, or vice versa. Maybe you simply want to match your
playing style to the instrument response. This velocity curve will remap your notes to the whatever
output you want.
• Display: in this little display you can see how the velocity curve looks. This display is not editable.
• Min: sets the minimum velocity value.
• Max: sets the maximum velocity value.
• Curve: applies logarithmic or exponential functions to the curve. Very useful to create realistic
and natural curves that match your playing style.
Note: in order to reset the values you just have to click on either the min, max or curve knobs. By adjusting
the min and max knobs to the same value you'll create a static line for a more consistent playing.
VOLUMES
Any library without little noises produced by the instrument would be sterile. This is the section
that brings life to the instrument, a lot of people refers to it as 'character'.
• Release: volume of the release samples.
• Air: volume of the air flowing through the instrument.
• Keyboard Keys: volume of the keyboard keys and the chords keys being pressed by the
interpreter while playing.
• Register Keys: volume of the switches being pressed by the interpreter when he changes the
register.
START OFFSET
To let the user experiment with different sonic characteristics and personalities, we’ve added the
envelope controls for each articulation or for both of them at once. The target articulation can be
selected with the menu above the knobs.
• Attack: time used to get the maximum volume at the beginning of the sample.
• Start Offset: it’s the point from which the sample will start playing. 0 ms start offset plays the
sample from the beginning. The maximum value is 100 ms. If the highest value is assigned, the
start offset will be set to ‘Auto’ and will dynamically change according to the velocity and the
speed that the notes are played. This has been implemented so you can accommodate the
attack response of the instrument to the different playing styles.
