What is It
In this lesson, you will revisit the different elements and principles of
art and how they apply to digital art. You will also be introduced to the world
of digital and how and for what it is used today. In addition, you will be
introduced to some of the common software used for digital art. An important
part of this lesson is a presentation and discussion of the features and basic
tools of drawing software.
● How are the drawings similar and how are they different?
● How were the elements and principles applied in each drawing?
You have seen how the elements and principles apply to traditional
art or art created by hand using a medium like paint, charcoal, pencil, or
clay. Starting with this lesson and onwards, you will see how the same
elements and principles as well as the different art processes still apply even
with the use of technology.
2D Art
● The Pencil Tool is used to draw free lines onto the picture.
● The Paint Bucket is used to fill an area with a solid color or pattern.
● The Square Tool is used to create perfect square or rectangular
shapes. By changing the line thickness in the Line Tool, you could
change the thickness of the square.
● The Line Tool is used to create perfectly straight lines.
● The Circle Tool is similar to the Square Tool, and is used to create
perfect circles. Thickness can be changed using the Line Tool.
● The Dye Tool is used to pick out colors already used somewhere in
the canvas.
Text Insertion
● The Typing Tool has basic functions that add text to the image in
different fonts and various sizes.
You will notice that you can create all the elements of art such as
lines, shapes, color, and texture using the tools available in most drawing
software. By practicing you can become better at it and create digital art
much like the way you do it in traditional art.
What’s More
You can use other devices such as a tablet or a laptop with a drawing
software that you are familiar with to work on this exercise.
Print your work and paste it on your notebook. If a computer and other
devices are not available, use a pen to draw the different lines and shapes in
your notebook.
