a section.
- Where necessary take;
 Acceleration due t gravity, g = 9.81ms-2
 Density of air = 1.2kgm-3
 Specific heat capacity of water = 4,200Jkg-1K-1

SECTION A
1. (a) State Newton’s laws of motion. (3 marks)

(b) Define the following terms;

(i) Momentum (1 mark)
(ii) The Newton (1 mark)
(iii) The acceleration due to gravity (2 marks)

(c) Water leaves a horse pipe at a rate of 10kg-1 with a nozzle speed of
20ms-1. If it is directed horizontally to a wall which stops it, calculate the
force exerted by the water on the wall. (4 marks)

(d) The figure below shows bodies connected by inextensible strings which
pass over frictionless pulleys. The friction between the bench and the 3kg
friction mass is 4N.

(ii) State the laws of kinetic friction. (3 marks)

(b) Describe a simple experiment to determine the coefficient of kinetic

friction between two solid surfaces. (5 marks)

(c) A ball is kicked from a spot 20m from the goal post with a velocity of
20ms-1 at an angle of 200 to the horizontal. The ball just clears the
horizontal bar of the goal post. Determine;

(ii) how far behind the goal post, the ball lands. (3 marks)

(d) A car of mass m1, moving with velocity u1 on a straight line made a head
on collision with a lorry of mass, m2 moving with velocity u2. After
collision, the vehicles move with velocities V1 and V2 respectively.
Use Newton’s laws of motion to show that total linear momentum is
conserved. (4 marks)

3. (a) A free particle of mass 5kg initially at a point is acted upon by forces as
shown below.
6N
7N
470
3N

(ii) Elastic and inelastic collision. (3 marks)

(c) State work energy theorem and verify it. (3 marks)

(d) The blades of a large wind turbine, designed to generate electricity,

sweeps out an area of 1,400m2 and rotate about a horizontal axis which
is directed into wind of speed 15ms-1 as shown below.
