POSSIBLE INTERVIEW QUESTIONS:

A. KNOWLEDGE OF FIELD OF WORK

attended) and completed my secondary school at ……………..(name of secondary
school) and on completion I enrolled with ………………(name of tertiary institution)
and completed …………………..(diploma/degree). I have ………….(years) teaching
experience in the foundation phase. I am currently working at or volunteering as a
foundation phase educator at …………………teaching grade……. I enjoy working with
children in the foundation phase. I am a hard worker and able to work under
pressure. I obtained a certificate in………..(award) as best teacher. I work well in a
team and have good interpersonal communication skills.
2. Why do you think you are the best candidate for this post? Or Why did you apply for
this post?
- Focus on your qualifications, experience and knowledge.
- I think I am a suitable candidate for this position because I am qualified for. I
completed a Bed degree in the foundation phase and have ……….. (years) as a
foundation phase educator. I want to respond to the call by the department of
education to fill this position to share my knowledge and skills with the team and
the community and I believe in myself that I will turn the school into a good centre
of effective teaching and learning. I am a hard worker, I fit well in a team and I am
willing to learn more to improve myself for the benefit of an African child.
B. CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT
3. How will you manage your classroom? Or How will you discipline in your classroom?
- Stress that you will be guided by the constitution of South Africa and the South
African School Act (SASA) and you know that Corporal punishment is prohibited
by the South African educational policies.
- Classroom rules has to be understood and well known by every learner.
- The relationship between I and learners has to be of mutual trust.
- Have constructive relationship with parents to let them involved in discipline of
their learners.
- Some behavioural problems are to be sent to the disciplinary committee.
- Learners who are constant in behaviours are to be taken to the life skill teacher for
counselling.
- Punishment such as sweeping the classroom or additional school activities under my
supervision
- Model good behaviour as a classroom teacher.

C. KNOWLEDGE OF THE SUBJECT


4. How will you teach the learners reading or mathematics? Or How will you assess your
learners?
- CAPS (Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement) provide details of what teachers
need to teach and assess on a grade by grade and subject by subject.
- My first step is to ensure that I have the CAPS document for all the subject I am
teaching
- I will ensure that my teaching is learner centred and make use of teaching aid.

D. ASSESSMENT:
- Assessment is an important tool to measure the understanding of the learners.
- As a teacher, I will apply different forms of assessment such as:
❖ Baseline assessment: at the beginning of the year.
❖ Diagnostic assessment: At the beginning of the lesson.
❖ Formative assessment: This one takes place during the course of teaching
and learning process.
❖ Summative assessment: This one takes place at the end of the year to
determine the progression of the learners.
5. What is your knowledge of the department of education?
- Nationally we have the minister of basic education, deputy minister and the director
general
- Provincially we have the MEC, HOD, the district director, circuit co-ordinator, circuit
managers, principals, deputy principal, departmental heads, teachers and parents
6. How will you manage diversity in your class or school?
- I will be guided by the constitution of South Africa.
- I will treat everybody with respect they deserve and ensure that disabled learners
are accommodated by roadways that make it easy for people using wheelchairs.
- I will use large fonts for short-sighted learners and ensure that they sit in the front.
- I will respect different all religions at the school and ensure that they are
accommodated by organising events where all the religions and traditions are
displayed especially during heritage month.
- I will treat all people with equality.

E. DECISION MAKING
7. You are the new teacher at the school. You realize that most of the useful teaching
and learning materials are not available. How can you go about this situation?
- I will ask a colleague at my phase, to verify whether those teaching and learning
materials are really pending or not available at school.
- Communicate the matter to the HOD
- Continue teaching while waiting for the solution.
- I can improvise
- I can download them from the department of education website.
- I can make use of GOOGLE.

8. How will you manage yourself?


- I believe in professionalism and I am a well-organized person.
- I will be punctual, have files for the subject I am teaching and have a personal time
table.
- I will prepare my lesson on time
- I will ensure that I meat time frames I terms of submissions.
- I believe in honesty and loyalty.
- I respect myself and others and treat them with the respect they deserve.
- I am able to manage my finances and I do not borrow money from anybody.
- I do not mix work with pleasure. I know when to focus on work and when to focus
on pleasure.

PROBLEM SOLVING (CONFLICT RESOLUTION)

9. You are a new teacher at school and you realize that there are two rival (conflicting)
groups at the school, one side with the Principal and the other with the Deputy
Principal or HOD, how will you go by this?
- Firstly indicate that conflicts are part of human life, but you are not there for such
therefore you are not going to entertain such by taking either side of the two
conflicting groups.
- Instead I will try to bring the two groups together by organising staff launch
whereby we sit and eat together.
- I will also organize staff trips or outing for a weekend or vacation and this will bring
them together and not focus on their differences and will ultimately model a way to
resolve their differences.
10. It is break time and two learners were fighting and are brought to you how will you
solve this?
- Indicate that you will calm the learners down, when they are calm you will hear
their side of the story (from each learner).
- If there are any witnesses I will call them and hear from them what really happened.
- I will let the learner who committed a mistake to apologise from the other learner
and let them shake hands to show that now there will be peace and realize their
mistakes.
- I will give them a task to be completed together to rebuild their relationship again.
