BACKROUND OF THE STUDY


Nowadays the widespread use of social media platforms
presents both opportunities and challenges. The growing use of
social media platform like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter may
have an impact on how students use it to conduct research,
work together on assignments, and manage their time.
Analyzing the relationship between social media use and
academic achievement can reveal important details about the
Santo Tomas Integrated High School learning environment.
This study aims to know the effects of social media on the
academic performance of grade 12 Ict students in Sto Tomas
Integrated High School.

ll. PRELIMINARY LITERATURE REVIEW


This paper explores the impact of social media on
higher education, focusing on a case study involving
275 participants at Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal
University. The study investigates how social media
influences teaching, learning, and academic
performance.
The initial case study revealed that 43% of
participants credited social media for improved
grades, while 57% held diverse opinions, indicating
varied perspectives. Additional studies in Malaysia
and Vehari highlighted a negative correlation
between excessive social media use and academic
performance, att ttutt the importance of
appropriate guidance.

In Cuddalore District, a study found that, despite


concerns, students tended to use social media
positively for academic purposes. Another study on
senior secondary school students revealed diverse
reasons for social media engagement, with no clear
connection between frequency of use and academic
achievements.
These studies emphasize the intricate
relationship between social media and higher
education. While some participants observed
positive effects on grades, others expressed
reservations. Understanding this nuanced dynamic
is essential for shaping effective educational
strategies and support mechanisms in the digital
era.

lll. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM/OBJECTIVES

General problem:
The use of social media become ubiquitous
in the society specially the teenager or the students
are most often using it. This study concern about
the potential effect of the social media to the grede
12 Ict academic performance.
State your specific research questions of
objectives:
• What relationship exists between students’ use
of social media and their capacity to maintain
concentration on academic work?
• How does the social media affect the academic
performance of the grade 12 Ict students?
• What are the way or strategies to not get
distract to social media?

lV. Methodology
This study is a Quantity research and Quasi
experimental research. This study will conduct a
questionnaire in Sto Tomas Integrated High School.
The materials or instrument will be using is
questionnaire because questionnaire is the best
instrument to use in this study and the participants
will be include 50 grade 12 ict student aged of 17-19
years old. The number of male and female will be equal.
