INTRODUCTION
Students who spend more time on social media sites are likely
to demonstrate poor academic performance. This is because
they spend time chatting online and making friends on social
media sites instead of reading books.

Jennifer Walsh, lead author of the study, which was published

in the journal Emerging Adulthood, wrote that students who
spent the most time using social media had “fewer academic
behaviors, such as completing homework and attending
class, lower academic confidence and more problems affecting
their school work, like lack of sleep and substance use.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
• According to Tuten and Solomon (2015), “Social media are
the online means of communication, conveyance,
collaboration, and cultivation among interconnected and
interdependent networks of people, communities, and
organizations enhanced by technological capabilities .It is
good for us, but it has an negative effects to the users who
cannot control and overused the social media.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
• This study will aim to find out the negative effects of social
media to the grade 11 students. This study sought the
answer to the following questions:

1. What are the possible negative effects of social media

platforms in the academic performance of students?
2. What are the ways to avoid negative effects of social
media platforms?
3. How does the students protect themselves from the
negative effects of social media platforms?
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
According to Borivali (2017) the use of social media platforms in
education helps students, teachers and parents to get more useful
information, to connect with learning groups and other educational
systems that make education convenient.
Ejmed.org, (2019) stated the detrimental effect of social media on
academic performance relating it to decreasing learning abilities,
dropping homework completion, and worsening academic
achievements.
St Martins College (2019) stated that social media plays an important
role in every student’s life. It is often easier and more convenient to
access information, provide information and communicate via social
media.
SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS OF THE
STUDY
• The study was conducted to assess the negative effects of social
media on students’ academic performance. Grade 11 students who
are actively using social media are the respondents of the study. It
was conducted during the academic year 2021-2022. The study
limited only on variables of social media that the researchers
assumed that has effects of respondents’ academic performance.
These variables are respondent’s access to internet, usage, perception
on social media, and their frequency of using it.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This study is significant to the teachers, parents and students.
This study will help the teachers of the school to know the
influence that social media has on their students, so as to
assist them to enlighten and create awareness to the students
on the possible influence it has on them. The study is of
significant to parents in the sense that they will know the
possible effects these social media usage has on their children,
so as to serve as watch-dog to their children on the usage of
the social networking site.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
• Academic Performance - is the measurement of the students
academic achievement across various academic subject.
• Negative effect - is regularly recognized as a stable, heritable trait
tendency to experience a broad range of negative feelings, such as
worry, anxiety, self-criticisms, and a negative self-view.
• Social media - is a term used to describe the interaction between
groups or individuals in which they produce, share, and sometimes
exchange ideas, images, videos and many more over the internet and
in virtual communities.
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
• There are many studies performed about the positive and negative effects of social media
on the students' academic performances. For example, Heffner (2016) alleged that the use
of social media can be a good outlet to deal with academic frustrations, especially if the
students are in contact with another student that is having the same problem. Social media
lets students to get connected with other students, which can be very useful because it will
allow them to discuss class matters via social media. Additionally, Adam Mahamat (2014)
tried to obtain students’ perceptions of how their use of social networking sites influences
their academic performances. The researchers performed a preliminary survey of a group
of Malaysian university students. It was found that the majority of respondents agreed that
social networking sites have a positive impact on their academic performances. Menseh
and Nizam (2016) described that social networking have a meaningful effect on the
students' academic performances. They also pointed out about the abnormal use of social
media platforms by students. The study suggested it is useful that universities and colleges
in Malaysia educate their students to use these platforms positively for educational
purposes which will ultimately result in a positive impact on their academic performance.
RELATED STUDIES
• Local Literature
Kim, (2011) stated that the effects of the social media on students’ performance, majority of the
respondents agree that the social media distracts them from their studies, displaces time of study,
and even disrupts library sessions. From this finding, one can deduce that that the social media has a
lot of negative effects on students’ academic performance. It could lead to time displacement
because the social media entertains young students with stimulating images and visual auditory
effects. This is more attractive and immediately gratifying than school related activities.
Consequently, using the social media will result in the displacement of academic activities as
suggested by the time displacement theory.  
• Foreign Literature
Mochies, (2021) have found a strong link between heavy social media and an increased risk for
depression, anxiety, loneliness, self-harm, and even suicidal thoughts. Social media may promote
negative experiences such as: Inadequacy about your life or appearance. Through social media
networks, they can create new friendships, express their views and opinions, and even create 'new
identities'. Social media also exposes students to a whole new way of learning. Research has shown
that students who are frequent users of social media are more innovative and exhibit better memory.
• Local Studies
Mingle and Adams (2015) asserted that majority of respondents experienced negative
effects i.e. poor grammar and spelling, late submission of assignment, less study time and
poor academic performance because of too much use of social media networks.
Moreover, addiction toward using social media among students was high. Eke, Omekwu
and Odoh (2014) described some dangers associated with social networking sites such as
Ecrime, Internet addiction, laziness, standard crime like, fraud, murder, kidnapping;
immoral act like, pornography, prostitution, cyber-bullying where identified.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
1. Research Design
-This study will use a qualitative research method to answer the questions raised in this research investigation.
 2. Respondents of the Study
-The research subject of this study will be the grade 11 senior high school student.
 3. Instrument of the Study
- The researcher used one kind of instrument to collect the needed data: The survey questionnaire.
