Introduction

Description of the Business

Silliman University
College of Business Administration

The KAWAYAN DGT was derived from the Bisaya word which means

“Bamboo”. Promoting this product for environmental purposes is our main goal

because our products are made from bamboo wood materials. The KAWAYAN

DGT utensils are designed as an alternative use for plastic utensils and the

promotion of these products is to have sustainable utensils set and the reduction of

the usage of plastic utensils or products. KAWAYAN DGT knows and believes

that we can eliminate the usage of plastic in our society. KAWAYAN DGT

addresses the issue that millions of tons of plastic end up in landfills each year and

one of the causes of it is single-use plastics. Plastic waste growth in landfills has

negative environmental effects. Due to plastic's resistance to breakdown and

potential for contaminated soils, groundwater, and oceans, marine life is seriously

at risk. To reduce non-recyclable and non-compostable waste and to safeguard the

environment from plastic pollution, single-use plastic products must be eliminated.

One of the simplest ways to encourage sustainability and lessen your daily plastic

footprint is to use eco-friendly disposable utensils. Many people use bamboo

cutlery. They have gained popularity over time, and more people are using bamboo

instead of metal or plastic. By buying our products, you can contribute to society

and the environment to become a better place. There are endless ways to

incorporate eco-friendly ideas into our lifestyles. Tiny steps still progress, take

yours.

Location of the Business

Due to the fact that this business is managed by a group of Sillimanian

students, KAWAYAN DGT's main location is in Dumaguete City, specifically in

the Silliman University Campus. Our company does not have a physical store yet

but the group will use social media platforms instead such as Facebook, Instagram,

Tiktok, and others platforms to advertise and sell products. The group will set up

small stalls inside the campus so that the product can be promoted easily

throughout Silliman Campus and throughout the city. Since Dumaguete City is

known for its prestigious school, Silliman University, this can give the business a

great opportunity to gain attention. The products of the business are ideal for those

who frequently eat out around the city. The exact location will be announced in the

near future. As The KAWAYAN DGT currently does not have a permanent

workshop for the production of its products. It was decided that the management

would rent a local space area owned by the family of one of the business partners

in Poblacion 2, Siaton Negros Oriental, which is about an hour away from

Dumaguete City.

Funding Requirement and Source

5
Silliman University
College of Business Administration

Budgetary resources for programs and projects are known as funding

sources. Grants, bonds, federal or state awards, individual donations, and internal

funds set aside for a business or group are examples of funding forms. In the case

of KAWAYAN DGT, the funding requirement will be based on the total cost of

production. The total cost of production will include labor, gathering of raw

materials, and other factors considered in making the product. The source of

funding for our project will be coming from the group’s own money. The group is

dedicated to raising awareness about single-use plastics and helping local farmers

and artisans, and that is the ultimate goal of the business.

Business Description

reducing plastic waste worldwide. KAWAYAN DGT products believe that raising

awareness and providing alternatives leads to change. Be that change today and

support a plastic-free world.

WE FOCUS on premium quality reusable and recyclable bamboo products

that conserve resources, reduce energy consumption, minimize landfill waste, and

benefit human health over the course of their long life cycle.

WE BUILD products to last using materials and production processes that

are less detrimental to the environment, and that protect the health of humans,

wildlife, and our natural world.

7
Silliman University
College of Business Administration

WE RECOGNIZE the importance of supporting local farmers and artisans

in the Dumaguete community as suppliers and part of our product, as they

represent the culture, skill, and talent of our locals to meet our criteria for

producing good quality products responsibly and ethically.

WE COMMIT not only to the development of a sustainable Negros

Oriental, but to the development of an economically viable, socially just, and

environmentally aware community in the Philippines as well.

The purpose of using bamboo utensils is to address the genuine problem of

plastic pollution in the environment. With affordability and product performance in

mind, we're attempting to lessen the garbage that people have been using regularly.

Using bamboo utensils not only benefits the environment but also supports the

livelihoods and income of the individuals who create them. As a result, this eco-

friendly alternative replaces plastic utensils, which is abhorrent in a world

dedicated to environmental sustainability.

Why Bamboo?

We have chosen bamboo because not only does it look and feel great, but it

is also 100% sustainable, fully biodegradable, and can be harvested in as little as 3-

5 years. Bamboo is a beautiful plant whose fibers are strong enough to replace

8

metal and wood in many applications. Choosing bamboo products over traditional

plastic products is one small step you can take toward reducing your environmental

footprint. Additionally, it grows quickly, and most importantly, it doesn’t require

much water to grow. Bamboo products can last a very long time and require little

maintenance. Bamboo also releases 35% more oxygen into our atmosphere and

absorbs more carbon dioxide compared to other plants.

Equipment and Materials Needed

The whole process of KAWAYAN DGT products is completely handmade.

No heavy types of machinery are used except for some small machines, small hand

tools, and cutting boards. These are the materials needed for the KAWAYAN DGT

products:

● Bamboo

○ The essential raw

materials for the craft

9
Silliman University
College of Business Administration

● Mechanical Hand Polisher

○ This is to polish and soften

the bamboo.

(photo for reference)

● Knives

○ It is used in splitting,

cutting, and slicing

bamboo.

● Wood Block

○ It is used like the Hammer

and Anvil or Bench block

for the work process. This

serves as a chopping board

in making the product.

10
Silliman University
College of Business Administration

● Water

○ It is used to soften the

bamboo surface for

weaving.

● Sanding paper

○ It was used to soften the

edges of the bamboo to

achieve fine details.

● Large boiling pot

○ This is where the bamboo

is placed during the

boiling process.

11
Silliman University
College of Business Administration

KAWAYAN DGT's production process is outlined below:

● The first step in making bamboo utensils is to obtain bamboo from local

farmers sustainably. Once the bamboo has arrived at the workshop, these

slabs are cut up by handcrafters who cut them up into lengths of

approximately 40 cm and 5 cm.

● After outlining 2 pieces on each slab, will proceed to cut the bamboo and

sand them down. The process is done first with a mechanical hand polisher.

This process will make sure that the bamboo has fine details that can only be

achieved with sandpaper and done by hand. The sanding process is all

handmade.

● For the spoon part, the scoop part is done with a gouge, one by one. It is a

completely handmade process and it requires a lot of skill. That's why the

KAWAYAN DGT counts several experienced artisans who have mastered

the techniques of wood carving. The knife is also a piece that requires a lot

of skill. To make it cut, they sharpen each side of the knife with sandpaper.

This process takes a bit of time and has to be done carefully so the knife

doesn't break.

● The bamboo fork is made with 4 points to give it enough rigidity. So the

KAWAYAN DGT makes sure of durability and a good quality product.

12
Silliman University
College of Business Administration

● Since the KAWAYAN DGT is a zero-waste mentality, they use the leftover

slab of the cut-out utensils to make the chopstick and bamboo straws. The

whole process is completely handmade.

● Following the cutting, sanding, and non-destructive stages, the bamboo is

boiled for 40 minutes in water containing vinegar to disinfect and clean.

When dry, they coat them with a bit of cold-pressed virgin coconut oil,

which makes them waterproof, shiny, and soft.

● Upon completion of all the processes, the bamboo products are ready for

packaging and marketing. Lastly, the KAWAYAN DGT ensures that the

entire workplace is filled with laughter and beauty.

Size of the Business

KAWAYAN DGT will belong to a micro-scale business. Since the business

is run by a group of students only, it would run in an extremely small-scale way.

This smaller classification of a small business means you operate with a very

minimal amount of staff, receipts, and business activities.

13
Silliman University
College of Business Administration

Considerations in Formulating the Product

1. Competitive Forces

There is little to no competition for wooden cutlery in the market,

particularly in our area, Dumaguete City. Based on observations, one coffee shop

in the locality is selling quality bamboo utensils for approximately 200-300 pesos,

aside from that shopping malls such as Super Lee-Plaza, Robinsons Place

Dumaguete, and Mr. D.I.Y offer decent quality versions for a much cheaper price.

Bamboo utensils are found in large stores or online retailers which makes it easier

to enter the market without having to worry too much about competition.

2. Economic Forces

By contributing to this local business, the KAWAYAN DGT benefits the

locals. Besides considering the economic contribution of businesses, it is also

important to consider their relevance to society. It is imperative that the business

considers community feedback in order to achieve positive feedback. Besides

focusing on profits, businesses should consider how they affect people and

communities.

Dumaguete City's local economy would benefit from KAWAYAN DGT

creating jobs and supporting local communities and artisans, which would generate

opportunities and provide jobs for the locals. As a result, the business provides

14
Silliman University
College of Business Administration

more job opportunities to local farmers and artisans. A total of five local

handcrafters and one local bamboo supplier are employed by the KAWAYAN

DGT at the moment. Currently, the business employs only local handicrafts and

suppliers since the business is just getting off the ground, but the management

hopes that in the upcoming months and years, the company will employ more local

handicrafters as part of the KAWAYAN DGT's support for local farmers and

artisans.

Given the abundance of bamboo trees in the province of Negros Oriental,

making bamboo utensils will be a rather simple process and alternative ways to use

sustainable products. Bamboo could be a critical component in the transition to

more circular production. This fast-growing grass plant can be used to create a

wide range of both durable and consumer products. Expenses will be more heavily

on promotion and the physical store rather than the production itself.

3. Political Forces

There are no expected political influences or events that could affect the

operations of KAWAYAN DGT’s utensil set.

15
Silliman University
College of Business Administration

4. Legal and Regulatory Forces

Health and safety regulations are scrupulously adhered to in the

circumstances we currently find ourselves in. We are documenting the

manufacturing process of our products as a good way to guarantee the security of

customers, we guarantee that our bamboo products are completely 100% natural

and chemical-free that could not harm the safety of the consumers. Before we

release our products to the public must have the quality check, KAWAYAN DGT

should follow and comply with all the document requirements and procedures

including the permits, clearances, and certifications of the Bureau of Plant

Industry that are required before we release the products and should have import

status as regulated.

5. Sociocultural Forces

The Philippines is considered the third-largest contributor to plastic waste

worldwide, contributing to an estimated 0.75 million metric tons of ocean plastic

every year. The Filipino people are well aware of the current issues regarding

plastic waste according to the surveys commissioned by the Global Alliance for

Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA) and conducted by the Social Weather Stations

(SWS), 7 over 10 Filipinos favor a national single-use plastics ban which

16
Silliman University
College of Business Administration

highlights the Filipino people’s strong support for a national ban on single-use

plastics (SUPs).

Bamboo utensils as an alternative to plastic ones would appeal to

Dumaguetenos who, in our observations, are largely ecologically conscious and

actively employ sustainable products like stainless steel bottles. Using sustainable

products requires responsible environmental awareness about the impact of

consumption choices, and choosing sustainable products that minimized the

externalities to our environment. One of the missions of KAWAYAN DGT is to

educate, promote and create more awareness about the impact that our purchasing

choice has on the environment and to partner with businesses to make these eco-

friendly alternatives more available and accessible to consumers.

Marketing Plan

Marketing Strategy

A marketing strategy is a long-term plan for attaining a business' objectives

through an understanding of customers' needs and the development of a distinct

and long-lasting competitive advantage. It includes everything, from choosing

which channels to utilize to contact your customers to figuring out who your

customers are.

In the case of KAWAYAN DGT, the group has decided to utilize social

marketing as an approach to market our products since our products involve

changing people’s behavior for the benefit of individuals and society as a whole.

Social Marketing

The development of initiatives aiming at influencing or sustaining people's

behavior for the benefit of both individuals and society at large is known as social

marketing. Social marketing, which combines concepts from social sciences and

commercial marketing, is a proven method for changing behavior in a lasting and

efficient manner.

23
Silliman University
College of Business Administration

Marketing Mix

As a component of an overall marketing strategy, a marketing mix contains

various areas of interest. The phrase usually pertains to the classification known as

the four Ps, which originally stood for product, price, placement, and promotion.

Product

KAWAYAN DGT'S Bamboo Utensil set supplies durable, long-lasting, eco-

friendly, and food-safe bamboo utensils (spoon, fork, knife, straw) that promote

sustainable living. Our purpose has been to support, educate, and inspire

individuals to switch to reusable and zero-waste material in order to reduce the

Price

Pricing, which can be a part of a company's marketing strategy, is the

process by which a company determines the price at which it will offer its goods

and services.

There are many strategies when it comes to pricing. The group has analyzed

all the possible ways to price our product and we have come to the conclusion that

we will be utilizing Market-Oriented Pricing. One of the easiest pricing methods

is this one. Market-oriented pricing is a method of pricing in which the price is

determined by the state of the market. Simple as it is, this is the best method that

we can use since a market-oriented pricing strategy is ideal for start-up businesses.

Market-oriented pricing compares similar products being sold on the market.

Depending on how closely the product compares to the competition, the seller then

chooses whether to set the pricing higher or cheaper.

Material Natural Bamboo

Advantage Safety, health, and environmental protection

It is evident that the KAWAYAN DGT products employ a lot of local

handicrafters, with which KAWAYAN DGT maintains a close relationship and

pays a fair price for their hard work. By buying the KAWAYAN DGT products,

you are not only getting a unique and handmade set of products, but you are also

helping a lot of local people in the Community to continue working in our

traditional crafts.

Place

Place strategy is a strategic part of the marketing mix that deals with how a

company should sell its services or products. The objective is to ensure that goods

and services are readily available to end users. An excellent marketing place

strategy enables the service and products to stand out, differentiating the company

from the rest of the competition. The place for selling KAWAYAN DGT’s

Bamboo Utensils set would be in Dumaguete City, specifically in Silliman

University.

28
Silliman University
College of Business Administration

Promotion

Promotion refers to the methods we will use to advertise and sell our

products and services. These are some methods we may include for our promotion;

Website

A website allows one to find new markets and trade globally for only a small

investment. Lower cost - a properly planned and well-targeted digital marketing

campaign can reach the right customers at a much lower cost than traditional

marketing methods.

Social Media

Customers can interact with you and find out more about what you provide.

With so many people using social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and

Instagram every single day, social media advertising is a marketing strategy that

we do not want to miss out on.

Videos

Share experiences and knowledge to build your reputation. Customers love

watching videos and you can capitalize by creating engaging video content for

your target market and uploading it to channels like YouTube.

Word of Mouth

Encourages customers to review your product or service on consumer

review websites. Your satisfied and loyal customers should become brand

29
Silliman University
College of Business Administration

ambassadors. With online platforms making it easier and easier for consumers to

communicate their opinions of products and services to the whole world, and

buyers now relying on candid testimonials of customers’ experiences, your clients

have the potential to make or break your company.

Loyalty Program

Give customers a reason to stick with your business. “customer's willingness

to repeatedly return to a company to conduct business. This is typically due to the

delightful and remarkable experiences they have with that brand.” Therefore, it

almost goes without saying that customer loyalty is essentially what every

company strives for—because, after all, a business can’t flourish and grow without

the support of its customers.

Food Bloggers

The management of KAWAYAN DGT can encourage well-known food

bloggers in Dumaguete, such as Where to Wander, to visit in order to increase the

visibility of the business and encourage customers to purchase items.

Flyers

Flyers are another tool that may be used to promote the product. It will bring

attention to the business promotion, products, and services.

30
Silliman University
College of Business Administration

Positioning

Product positioning in marketing is how you want your product to be

perceived by the customers and it is somehow a way to make an edge over your

competitors. The group has decided to position our product as being durable and

eco-friendly bamboo utensils. Other bamboo products are just made just for the

sake of being “eco-friendly”. However, in KAWAYAN DGT, we make sure that

our products are not just eco-friendly but also very durable. We make sure that our

products are sustainable and reliable in the long run.

Recommendation and Conclusion

Recommendation

Based on the findings, the researchers have recommended the following:

● Even though bamboo is already well-known as an alternative to plastic for

making utensils, the researchers suggest that KAWAYAN DGT build and

improve its product promotion. Since KAWAYAN DGT is just starting out,

it doesn’t have the power or resources to grow around the world. But this

kind of growth through promotion can lead to a number of benefits, such as

more opportunities for growth and variety in the market.

● KAWAYAN DGT’s marketing needs more work. They have to respond

right away to the goals, needs, requirements, and feedback of clients.

Customers of KAWAYAN DGT feel valued and appreciated, which is good

for both sides. Listening to customer feedback on social media helps define

and predict what the audience wants. KAWAYAN DGT may help with back

problems and offer special deals to keep customers coming back.

Technopedia says that web advertising spreads information about products

quickly and in all parts of the world. The study suggests that KAWAYAN

DGT makes a strong online ad that uses the internet to find, target, and send

marketing messages to the best customers.

32
Silliman University
College of Business Administration

● Understanding the Mission, Vision, and Purpose of the business will help

build a lasting product strategy. It is very important that the KAWAYAN

DGT’s mission, vision, and purpose match up with its product strategy. It

not only helps get the initial buy-in to get started, but it also helps to get

broader organizational support over time which is important for the

product’s long-term success.

● Economic changes have prompted businesses to establish long- and short-

term strategies for success, creating harsh competitiveness. Now more than

ever, KAWAYAN DGT must always be informed of consumer behaviors,

market developments, and developing trends to create creative and cutting-

edge products and services.

● There should be a section of the workshop for the employment of women

and people with disabilities, as recommended by KAWAYAN DGT

management. This is to promote and provide opportunities to all women and

those with disabilities to give them a space where they can work fairly.

33
Silliman University
College of Business Administration

Conclusions

The following conclusions were made based on the finding and outcomes of the

marketing plan:

● Bamboo is an extremely renewable resource that offers many advantages in

addition to the product itself. Similar to wood, it has numerous advantages,

but it also has extra benefits that are good for the environment. Bamboo

represents an important resource plant with tremendous economic,

ecological and environmental benefits, such as improving rural livelihood,

saving forest trees and mitigating environmental problems. KAWAYAN

DGT is a bamboo kitchen utensil that is an excellent choice if you are

determined to abandon the use of metal utensils and equipment in your

kitchen.

● KAWAYAN DGT is environmentally friendly and reasonably priced, that is

why it is very affordable to all, especially to the people of Dumaguete City

and also to the students of Silliman University. Because they are

lightweight, these utensils are extremely portable, it is easy for the students

to carry it everywhere they go, especially that the students of Silliman

University like to always eat outside of their homes because most of the time

the students are busy doing school work inside the school premises or near

the location of Silliman University.

34
Silliman University
College of Business Administration

● With the use of KAWAYAN DGT we can effect change not only in our

generation, but also in our planet. For a healthier, cleaner, and safer

community, we must live in a sustainable environment. If this is done all

over the world, we will be saving resources instead of using non-recyclable

or non-reusable materials.

● KAWAYAN DGT is produced using bamboo and it does not necessitate

meticulous attention or monitoring that is why it is an advantage to the local

farmers and to the producers of bamboo utensils. Because bamboo is

harvested every three to four years, it is a great renewable resource.

● KAWAYAN DGT can produce a wide range of materials, meeting

consumer demands while protecting the environment. By using

KAWAYAN DGT products in your home, you are helping to shift consumer

preferences toward products that are good for both you and the environment.

Also, you inspire the people around you to shift from single use plastic

utensils to a more practical and helpful alternative.

● KAWAYAN DGT believes that the product they offer is beneficial for

students and even workers who eat at fast food restaurants which often offer

single-use plastics. This product makes an individual decrease their carbon

footprints and helps the environment a lot.

35
Silliman University
College of Business Administration

● KAWAYAN DGT is well aware that the products they offer are not new to

the market, which is why they aim to provide the best quality (durability,

and long-lasting) to ensure the satisfaction of customers.

● KAWAYAN DGT recognized the importance of supporting local farmers

and artisans in Dumaguete City. As part of the production, the KAWAYAN

DGT always recognized the skills and talents of our locals in producing a

sustainable local product.

● KAWAYAN DGT’s raw materials are bamboo and will only be acquired

through local farmers. With that, local farmers will be able to sustain their

way of living because of the continuous demand they get from the company.

● KAWAYAN DGT provides a chance for locals with a passion for carving

and those in need of employment to have a better job that they will enjoy.

● KAWAYAN DGT will be a stepping stone in bringing awareness to the

localities on how big of a problem plastic waste is on our environment. It is

a way of telling the people how critical our environment is because of

plastics.

● KAWAYAN DGT can provide additional income to the local farmers. It can

also make our place known to be one of the producers of bamboo utensils

and this can make our economy grow.
