Child Labor

Child labor in its essence is a form of child abuse, according to the

International Labor Organization it is any type of work that deprives children of their
childhood, their potential and their dignity, and that is harmful to physical and mental
wellbeing of a child. Child labor is very detrimental to the development of a child as it
disrupts the usual activities fitting of a child. The impacts of child labor can sometimes be
long-lasting and be carried into their adulthood.
Let us establish that child labor is not a problem of the minority but a problem
on a global scale. One might think that this problem doesn’t exist in some countries, but you
just have to look far and deep enough to know that it is present in every place we look into.
According to an article from UNICEF, the latest global estimates indicate that around 160
million children are engaged in child labor at the beginning of 2020.
To highlight the dangers of child labor we will discuss its health and social
impacts on children. Exposure to dangerous amounts of the chemical lead can lead to
“decreased intelligence, impaired neurobehavioral development, decreased stature and
growth, and impaired hearing” specially in the case of children where their brains is still
developing, and disruptions of such developmental processes leads to long-lasting negative
impacts (Ide & Parker, 2005). Another study done on the health implications children face
working in the gem polishing industry showed that out of the 20,000-child laborer whose
mean age is 11.3 years old, 37% of these children experienced finger injury, 28 % had
headaches and 27% complained of respiratory discomfort coupled with the fact this industry
did not provide any protective equipment and that the workplace had poor ventilation,
lighting and workstations. These physical effects alone attest to the dangers of child labor,
these physical effects can translate very easily to the social life of the children. The child can
develop stress and depression due to these working conditions because of the labor they are
put through instead of the love they ought to have. Due to these experiences a child may have
trouble socializing with people around them even children their age, they may distance
themselves thinking they are far and different from others. Pause momentarily and think
when these children ask themselves, why can't I catch up to my peers? Why can’t I do what
they do? Why am I like this? Just because someone, maybe their parents or other people, took
their rights, abused them and deprived them of what is rightfully theirs, their time being a
child, being able to play, learn, create and grow as a child.
Ultimately the problem of child labor remains to be existent and needs to be
discussed further. We have established that it is a problem of global scale, a problem of high
urgency and a problem that needs to be eradicated as fast as possible as it poses detrimental
impacts on a child and detrimental effects as well in our society, as our children, the younger
generation will be the building blocks of the society and our future.
