PART – B
(Answer all five units, 5 X 10 = 50 Marks)
UNIT – I
2 (a) Define kinematic pair. Explain about their classification.
(b) Explain about any two inversions of double slider crank chain.
OR
3 Prove that Harts and Paucellier mechanisms are exact straight line motion mechanisms.
UNIT – II
4 (a) Discuss with neat sketches about Ackermann’s steering gear mechanism.
(b) Two shafts are connected by a universal joint. The driving shaft rotates at a uniform speed of
1200 rpm. Determine the greatest permissible angle between the shaft axes so that the total
fluctuation of speed does not exceed 100 rpm. Also calculate the maximum and minimum speeds of
the driven shaft.
OR
5 (a) Derive the expression for ratio of driving tensions of a flat belt drive.
(b) Explain the phenomena of ‘slip’ and ‘creep’ in a belt drive.
UNIT – III
6 In the mechanism show in figure below, the crank O1P rotates at 50 rad/s. The dimensions of the
links are O1P = 80 mm, PR = 650 mm, QR = 200 mm, Q3R = 180 mm, Q2T = 350 mm,
O2S = 175 mm and QS = 125 mm. Find the velocity of the point T on the bell crank lever by
instantaneous centre method.

7 The mechanism shown in below figure the driving crank OA rotates at 60 r.p.m. For the position
shown, determine the magnitude and direction of 1. The acceleration of the slider B; and 2. The
angular acceleration of the links AC, QCD and BD.
UNIT – IV
8 (a) Derive a relation for minimum number of teeth on the gear wheel and the pinion to avoid
interference.
(b) The centre distance between two meshing spiral gears is 150 mm and the angle between the shafts
60o. The gear ratio is 2 and the normal circular pitch 10 mm. The driven gear has a helix angle of
25o, determine: (i) The number of teeth on each wheel. (ii) The exact centre distance.
(iii) The efficiency if the friction angle is 4o.
OR
9 (a) What do you understand by ‘gear train’? Discuss the various types of gear trains.
(b) The speed ratio of the reverted gear train, as shown in figure below is to be 12. The module pitch of
gears A and B is 3.125 mm and of gears C and D is 2.5 mm. Calculate the suitable numbers of teeth
for the gears. No gear is to have less than 24 teeth.

10 A symmetrical cam with convex flanks operates a flat-footed follower. The lift is 8 mm, base circle
radius 25 mm and the nose radius 12 mm. The total angle of the cam action is 120o.
(i) Find the radius of convex flanks. (ii) Draw the profile of the cam. (iii) Determine the maximum
velocity and the maximum acceleration when the cam shaft rotates at 500 r.p.m.
OR
11 (a) How are cams classified? Describe in detail.
