ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SECTION

1. A 1000-seat multiplex cinema building is divided into three


theatres. There are 470 seats in the first theatre, and the third
theatre has 150 seats less than the second theatre.
How many seats are in the third theatre ?

2. Some kids went on a school ski trip by car, 3 to a car,


and the rest went by van, 5 to a van. In total, 140 kids went,
using 40 vehicles. How many kids went by car ?

3. A restaurant bought 140 dollars worth of wine at $10 a bottle


and 140 dollars worth of wine at $14 a bottle. What was the
average cost per bottle (round your answer to the nearest cent) ?

4. The digit sum (2+3) of 23 is a multiple of 5, and so is the digit


sum (8+7) of 87. How many two digit numbers are there whose
digit sum is a multiple of 5 ?

5. Alya's necklace broke. She found 1/3 of the beads on the


floor and 1/4 on the couch. 1/6 of the beads remained
strung on the necklace, and 12 beads were never found.
How many beads were originally on the necklace ?

6. A thick hose can fill a swimming pool in 4 hours. A medium


hose would fill the same pool in 6 hours, and it would take 12
hours for a thin hose to fill the pool. If all three hoses are used at
the same time, how long would it take to fill the pool ?

7. How many positive whole numbers smaller than 1000


are either multiples of 9 or multiples of 11 ?
8. Alphy owes Beth 20 cents. In how many different ways can
he pay off the debt using standard Canadian coins (1-cent
and/or 5-cent and/or 10-cent coins) ?

9. Linda saw ducks, swans and herons in the Nature Park.


-- For every heron, she saw 3 ducks.
--For every heron, she saw 2 swans.
--She saw 36 birds in all.

How many of each bird did she she?

10. At the bowling booth there are red pins, yellow pins and
blue pins. You receive:
-- 2 points for hitting a red pin.
--5 points for hitting a yellow pin.
--7 points for hitting a blue pin.
If Jan hits three pins, find all the scores she could have
received.
