Calculation of Fabric utilization

Fabric utilization is calculated by weight

Step 1: Measure the lay length (A) or marker length that should be used in bulk cutting. Suppose fabric width
is 1.2 meters. Collect the information of fabric GSM (Grams per square meter).

Step 2: Calculate weight of that lay (B).

Fabric Weight = Fabric width X Lay Length X GSM X No. of plies (You can also calculate taking multiple lays) or
1.2A*GSM * no. of plies

Step 3: Cut the patterns and collect all waste fabric and weigh waste (C). Normally includes ends losses, cut
waste.

Step 4: Weight of the fabric of cut panels D= (B-C)

Step 5: Fabric utilization% = Weight of cut panels (D)/Total weight of the lay (B)*100%

for the accuracy you can do this exercise with multiple lays and take average of them.

Example: For better understanding I have shown an example in the following.

Step 1: Assume that

a) Measured lay length = 3 meters
b) Fabric GSM = 150
c) No. of Plies = 5 and
d) Fabric width = 1.2 meters,

Step 2: Calculated weight of the lay = 3*150*5*1.2 =2700 grams

Step 3: Weight of the collected waste after cutting = 300 grams

Step 4: Weight of the cut panels = (2700 – 300) = 2400 grams

Step 5: Fabric utilization percentage = (2400/2700*100) = 88.9%

Fabric Consumption for Basic T-shirt

Calculation – 01: Formula in Centimeter:

Suppose one of T-shirt’s Body length (72+4) cm, Sleeve length (23+2) cm, Chest length (Dia)
(53+2) cm and G.S.M 180. Determine the fabric consumption for the basic T-Shirt.

Solution:
Here, Body Length = 76 cm
Sleeve Length = 25 cm
Chest Length = 55×2=110 cm (For both side)

Figur
e: A basic t-shirt and his measurement
We get,
Fabric consumption = [(Body length + Sleeve length) * (Chest * 2) * G.S.M] / (1000 * 1000)
kg
= [(76 + 25) * (55*2) * 180] / 1000000 kg
= 1999800 / 1000000 kg
= 0.19995 kg
The amount of fabric is just for 1 piece. Generally 12 pieces are counted with one.
Fabric consumption for 1 Dozen = 12×0.19998 kgs
= 2.399 kgs
Fabric consumption for 1 Dozen 2 kgs and 399 gms.

Calculation – 02: Formula in Inch:

Here, Body Length = (28+ 1) inch
Sleeve Length = (9+1) inch
Chest Length = (21+1) inch =22 inch×2 = 44 inch
G.S.M = 180
According to formula,
Fabric consumption = [(Body length + Sleeve length) * (Chest * 2) * G.S.M] / (1550 * 1000)
kg
= [(29 + 10) * (22*2) * 180] / 1550000 kg
= 308880 / 1550000 kg
= 0.199920 kg
The amount of fabric is just for 1 piece. Generally 12 pieces are counted with one.
Fabric consumption for 1 Dozen = 12×0.199920kgs
= 2.391 kgs
Fabric consumption for 1 Dozen 2 kgs and 391 gms.
