Knit Garments Fabric Consumption Formula

Clear concept on correct fabric consumption and costing is a primary requisite for a
merchandiser as fabric cost bears the 40% to 45% of the total cost of any garments.

To calculate the fabric consumption of knit garments we need following information:

a. Body length of the garment in cm. Suppose it is - 70 cm+5cm (Sewing allowance)=75cm

b. 1/2 Chest width in cm. Suppose it is 48 cm+2cm (Sewing allowance)=50cm
c. Sleeve length of the garment in cm. Suppose it is 20 cm+5cm (Sewing allowance)=25cm
d. Armhole circumference in cm. Suppose it is-40cm+2cm (Sewing allowance)=42cm
e. Fabric GSM. Suppose it is 180 gsm
f. Percentage of fabric wastage. Suppose it is 10%

***For consumption we have to consider the measurement of middle size garment or the
garment containing maximum quantity.

Consumption:
Lengt Widt Consumption in
Fabric Consumption Calculation of a Knit T-Shirt
h h SCM
Back Part
75 cm ( length) x 50 cm ( Chest width) 75 50 3,750 scm
Front Part
75 cm ( Front length) x 50 cm ( Front chest width) 75 50 3,750 scm
Sleeve
25 cm ( Sleeve length) x 42 cm ( Armhole
25 42 2,100 scm
circumference) x 2 ( 2 sleeves)
Total Fabrics Consumption 9,600 scm/pc

Now we can apply following formula to make consumption for 1dzn garments :

=(Fabric consumption in SCM X GSM X 12 / 10,000,000) + Wastage

=(9600 X 180 X 12 / 10,000,000) + 10%
=2.0736+10%
=2.0736+0.20736
=2.280 KG/DZN

or

Let us make the 9600 scm into sm. We know 10000 scm=1sm 0.960 sm/pc
Fabric is 180gsm, (that is, 1sm=180gram). So 0.960 172.8
sm=0.960x180= gram/pc
We know 1,000gram=1kg. So 172.8 gram=172.8/1,000= 0.1,728 kg/pc
Wastage 10% 0.01728 kg
0.19008
Total Weight with wastage
kg/pc
Therefore, Weight of 1dzn (12 Pcs) 2.280 Kg/Dzn

Note:
scm=square centimeter
sm=square meter

*Why 12?
Ans: Calculation of 1dozen (12pcs) garments

*Why 10,000,000?
Ans: 10,000 x 1,000=10,000,000
We know GSM = Grams per square meter. Conversion of the fabric into square meter.
1m=100cm, 1sqr meter=10,000 cm (100cm x 100cm),
(During the consumption pls used measurement of middle size for calculation or
used the size which have most of the qty. If the style have 6 sizes then used
size number 04 for consumption. Here we will consider the size: "L" for
calculate the consumption)

i. Body length of the garments in cm. Say it is - 73 cm

ii. Sleeve length of the garments in cm. Say it is - 19.5 cm

iii. Approximate sewing allowance at body hem, shoulder joint, sleeve hem &
armhole joint (in cm). Say it is - 10 cm

iv. Chest width (1/2) in cm. Say it is - 52 cm

v. Approximate sewing allowance at both side seam (in cm). Say it is - 4 cm

vi. Fabric GSM (finish). Say it is - 160 gsm

vii. Approximate fabric wastage in various stage. Say it is - 10%

(In this regards pls note that, fabric wastage depend on how many additional
elements the garments have, which may changed in any time.If the garments has
rotary print, enzyme stone wash etc than the fabric wastage will be more than
normal wastage)

If you already have all the above information then, now just put the following
information and get the fabric
consumption.http://knitgarmentsconsumption.blogspot.com/ otherwise you can
follow the below rules

Rules:
{(B/length + S/length + Sewing Allowance) X (1/2 Chest + Sewing Allowance)}X 2
X
GSM X 12 / 10000000 + Wastage

= {(73 + 19.5 + 10) X (52 + 4)} X 2 X 160 X 12 / 10000000 + 10%

= (102.5 X 56) X 2 X 160 X 12 / 10000000 + 10%

= 5740 X 2 X 160 X 12 /10000000 +10%

= 22041600 / 10000000 + 10%

= 2.20416 + 10 %

= 2.424576

= 2.43 kg per dozen. (Consumption)
