Diffusion can occur in any mixture, including one that includes a

semipermeable membrane, while osmosis always occurs across a
semipermeable membrane. One big difference between osmosis and diffusion
is that both solvent and solute particles are free to move in diffusion, but when
we talk about osmosis, only the solvent molecules (water molecules) cross
the membrane. Both osmosis and diffusion equalize the concentration of two
solutions. Both diffusion and osmosis are passive transport processes, which
means they do not require any input of extra energy to occur. In both diffusion
and osmosis, particles move from an area of higher concentration to one of
lower concentration.
2. Diffusion is important to cells because it allows them to gain the useful
substances they require to obtain energy and grow, and lets them get rid of
waste products.

4. Animal cell: The pure water is separated from a concentrated solution by a
partially permeable membrane. The concentrated solution is the cytoplasm
and the partially permeable membrane is the cell membrane. Therefore,
osmosis will occur. Water molecules will diffuse from the dilute solution into
the concentrated solution. As more and more water enters the cell, it swells.
The cell membrane has to stretch as the cell gets bigger and bigger, until
eventually the strain is too much, and the cell bursts.
Plant cell: the plant cell in pure water will take in water by osmosis through its
partially permeable cell membrane. As the water goes in, the cytoplasm and
vacuole will swell. The cytoplasm presses out against the cell wall, but the
wall resists and presses back on the contents. A plant cell in this state is tight
and firm. It is said to be turgid. The outward pressure of the cytoplasm on the
cell wall is called turgor pressure. The plant cell will lose water by osmosis.
The cytoplasm shrinks and stops pushing outwards on the cell wall. The cell
becomes floppy, it is said to be flaccid. As the cytoplasm shrinks further and
further into the center of the cell, the cell wall gets left behind. The cell
membrane, surrounding the cytoplasm, tears away from the cell wall. A cell
like this is said to be plasmolysed.

● It must be a low water concentration solution.
● If you place an animal or a plant cell in a hypertonic solution, the cell
shrinks, because it loses water (water moves from a higher
concentration inside the cell to a lower concentration outside)
Plasmolysis is the process in which plant cells lose water in a
hypertonic solution.
