Homage to Guru Padmasambhava!

Wishing to perform a Feast Offering connected with the Guruyoga of the Seven Line
Prayer for Guru Rinpoche, clean a cloistered place, decorate it with offerings, and set up
a statue or thangka of Guru Padmasambhava with his consort. Arrange two tormas for
the Three Roots (lama torma on the right, dakini torma on the left), with tea on the right
and milk on the left, medicine in the right skull cup, blood in the left, in front the
necessities (the five plates), and bountiful food and drink below in front as feast
offering items led by meat and beer. Sprinkle it all with water for purification. Gather
damaru, vajra and bell, drum and cymbals, various types of musical instruments. The
practitioner should conduct the ritual with a single-pointed mind.

iv
v
Padmasambhava
Amitabha emits a red ray of light that pierces Dhanakosha Lake in Oddiyana; there, an immaculate
lotus arises from the center of the lake. King Indrabhuti dispatches his minister to investigate the
miraculous emanation. The minister find a child of eight seated on the lotus and encircled by rainbow
auras and dakinis. When the child is brought to the court and the king questions him, he replies: "My
father is Wisdom. My mother is Voidness. Mine is the country of Dharma. I am sustained by clarity
and perplexity." He is Padmasambhava, the Lotus-Born Guru, and the lake symbolizes his eight
manifestations.

Seeing an immediately efficacious doctrine, Padma traveled to the highest heaven. Vajrasattva
revealed to him all sound (nama) as mantra and all appearances (rupa) as enchantment. He learned the
Mahayoga tantras, completed the two truths blended into one, and activated completion through ritual.
Padmasambhava initiated the wide diffusion of Buddhism in Tibet. As a great exorcist, he was able to
overcome local demonic opponents of Buddhism. He grew from being a miracle worker to gigantic
proportions and was spoken of as the second Buddha. He accomplished a fusion of the old and new.
The Thang yig sets forth in epic language the triumphal procession of Padmasambhava, involving local
and mountain gods, lineage and ancestral deities.

This painting shows eight bodhisattvas to his right and eight monks to his left, representing the two
planes of the eight doctrines. Also shown are the various manifestations of protectors and herukas,
bands of knowledge-holder heroes. At the top are the twenty-five disciples of Padmasambhava. He
transmitted the essence of his teachings to them. As each one symbolically offered body, speech, and
mind to the guru, he or she perfected a particular meditative realization. Through their efforts, the
lineage of Padmasambhava flows even to the present time.

Recite the Seven Line Prayer as much as you can. Think that by praying devotedly, from the point of
union and from the hearts of the Lama and consort, five-colored light rays of wisdom, stretch forth
and, by dissolving into your own heart, bless your stream of being. On this occasion repeat the
VAJRA (BENDZA) GURU mantra as appropriate (at least 100 times).

This was composed by Lama Jigdrel Yeshe Dorje Dudjom Rinpoche according to the wish of His
Holiness Jidal Dagchen Sakya Rinpoche of the Phuntsog Podrang, to be inserted in the Feast Offering
in Seven Lines by the great Lama Mipham Rinpoche.

Having taken the extra torma outside, in front of the Vajracarya turn the offering plate upside down so
that he may place the crossed vajra upon it saying TISHTHA VAJRA; that is the ritual system.

Saying these syllables, you should see your mind itself, passing beyond rejection and
acceptance of what from the beginning has been a fabrication, as the countenance of the great
primordial Dharma Body. Also, view all appearances, which are like an illusion, as nature of the
Lama, and by dedicating merit and saying blessings, you should make a benediction.

Thus on the eighth waxing day of the seventh month of the Fire Pig year, 1887, this
prayer for serving Guru Padmasambhava in all lifetimes arose from the lake of the mind of
Lama Mipham Nampar Gyalwa. May it be auspicious.

Strive to repeat the above prayer once during each sixth part of the day. Samaya gya.

This prayer was written down by Yeshe Tsogyal in Tibetan characters on the silk cloth of
Vairocana's robe. Amidst a crowd of people, Chogyur Dechen Lingpa (1829-1870), who was the
incarnate form of Lhase Muchu (King Tri-song-de-tsan's second son, 8th-9th centuries), took it
from its hiding place from Mount Kongmo Wokma at Tragri Rinchen (Precious Mountain) on the
right side of the eminent place Sangchen Namtrag. Immediately after that it was copied properly
by Padma Garwang Lodrö Taye. May virtue increase.

A Summary of the Benefits of the Tenth Day Observances
by HH Dudjom Rinpoche Jikdral Yeshe Dorje

Om Svasti.

Like an excellent vase, a wish-granting tree or a wish-fulfilling jewel

You bestow every blessing and accomplishment desired.
By recollecting you, Orgyen Vajradhara, my longing is dispelled.
In all my lives may I find refuge in You!

In the Dongtseg chapter of the root tantra Gathering of the Guru’s Intent, Guru Rinpoche uttered these
secret vajra words with the fearless roar of a lion:

I, who am known as the self-arising lotus,

Was emanated from the heart of the Buddha of Boundless Illumination
The light of Arya Avalokitesvara’s speech.
Brother of all Dakinis and King of the Viras
I preside over the enlightened activity of all conquerors of the three times.
Endowed with the great power of compassion appearing
As the Nirmanakaya of the unequalled Samantabhadra, the great Vajradhara.
With a tremendous wave of enlightened activity
I tame whomever, in whatever way
Thereby fulfilling the hopes of sentient beings.”

The Vajra Lama, widely renowned as Padmasambhava or Pema Jungne, is the embodiment of
the wisdom of infinite conquerors, the one who manifests and absorbs each of the three roots’
mandalas, who is kinder than even the Buddha Himself to disciples in the Land of Snows. According
to the perceptions of short-sighted disciples, many events in His awe-inspiring life story occurred
solely on the Tenth Day of the moon’s waxing. Witness:

As the sun rose on the Tenth day of the Monkey month (the sixth Tibetan month), He was born
in the bud of a lotus on Lake Dhanakosha. In turning the wheel of Dharma for the Dakinis of the
island, He became known as Guru Tsokye Dorje.

On the tenth day of the Tiger month (the twelfth Tibetan month), He was invited to Oddiyana
by the King Indrabhuti and enthroned as heir to the king, whence he took Bhasadhara as His wife. In
carrying out the spiritual and temporal duties of a prince, He became known as Guru Pema Gyalpo.
On the tenth day of the Hare month (the first Tibetan month), He renounced His kingdom and
practiced the yogic disciplines of union and liberation in the Sitavana Charnel Ground. In magnetizing
the mamos and dakinis, He became known as Guru Shantarakshita.

On the tenth day of the Dragon month (the second Tibetan month), He was ordained by Ananda
and received teachings on all of sutra and mantra from many learned and accomplished beings. In
demonstrating consummate mastery of all aspects of knowledge, He became known as Guru Shakya
Senge or Loden Chokse.

On the tenth day of the Snake month (the third Tibetan month), when the king of Zahor tried to
burn Him, He transformed the pyre into a lake using His miraculous powers, thus causing faith to arise
in the king, who adopted Buddhism as the kingdom’s religion. By relying on Princess Mandarava he
arose in a vajra body and became known as Chime Pema Jungne.

On the tenth day of the Horse month (the fourth Tibetan month), when the possessed ministers
of Oddiyana tried to burn Him and His consort, He transformed the pyre into a lake. Using His
miraculous powers the Master and His consort emerged, sitting radiantly atop the bed of a lotus on the
lake, thus inspiring faith in them. In ripening and liberating the kingdom through the ocean of Dharma
teachings he gave, He became known as Guru Pema Thötreng Tsal.

On the tenth day of the Sheep month (the fifth Tibetan month), He confronted the Tirthikas of
South India who posed a great threat to the Buddhist teachings. With a great display of miracles, He
reduced to dust the Tirthika gods and their protectors. In raising high the victory banner of the
Buddhist teachings, He became known as Guru Senge Dradrok.

On the tenth day of the Bird month (the seventh Tibetan month), the Tirthikas of Tamradvipa,
cast Him into the River Ganga. Performing a vajra dance as he rose into the sky, He reversed the flow
of the river. Inspiring faith through His miraculous deeds and establishing the kingdom in the Buddhist
teachings, He became known as Guru Khading Tsal.

On the tenth day of the Dog month (the eighth Tibetan month), Tirthikas attempted to poison
Him. Unharmed, he transformed it into nectar, causing His majestic presence to grow ever more
magnificent. By inspiring faith through His miraculous deeds, he converted the Tirthikas and their
followers to the Buddha’s teachings and became known as Guru Nyima Özer.

On the tenth day of the Pig month (the ninth Tibetan month), he arose in a youthful vajra body
at Yangleshö in Nepal and bound to oath all of the gods and demons of Nepal and Tibet. By practicing
the glorious Samyak, He achieved the vidyadhara level of supreme mahamudra and became known as
Guru Dorje Thötreng Tsal.

On the tenth day of the Mouse month (the tenth Tibetan month), He arrived in central Tibet and
subdued all the unruly gods and demons to erect the glorious Dharma temple of Samye. He ripened
and liberated the fortunate king and his subjects by lighting the lamp of sublime sutra and mantra
dharma and became known as Guru Padmasambhava.

On the tenth day of the Ox month (the eleventh Tibetan month), at Paro Taktsang and other
places in Bhutan, He arose in a terrifying and wrathful form to bind the land-owning spirits of Tibet
under an oath to guard termas. He then concealed an inconceivable number of terma-including Dharma
teachings, wealth, and sacred substances-throughout the central and outlying regions of the Land of
Snows. In issuing prophecies about who would serve the dharma who by preserving the termas, He
became known as Guru Dorje Trolö Tsal.

The specific benefits of performing puja on each of the Tenth Day holidays are as follows:
1- Illnesses, harmful forces and hindrances of all types will be pacified while life-span, merit, and
prosperity will flourish.
2- Mental bliss, swift confidence, and charisma will increase so that your influence over humans
and non-humans along with your authority and resources increase and the land-owning
protectors will obey you as a servant.
3- Harm caused by the Lord of Death and the eight classes of malevolent spirits will be pacified as
your ethics become pure and your wisdom blazes beyond boundaries.
4- You will be unharmed by unfavorable astrological events and places, thieves and enemies, so
that wherever you go, home or away, your good fortune, happiness and well-being will
flourish,
5- You will be unharmed by sadak, nagas, and nyan as dharmapalas carry out any task you wish.
40
6- Harm from obstacles, enemies, and malevolent forces will be pacified, and everything you
desire will be brought under your control.
7- Having overcome chronic diseases and the like, bodily bliss and mental happiness together with
your retinue and resources will flourish and things will be accomplished according to plan.
8- Inauspicious years, months, and days as well as bad omens will be pacified as your influence
and good fortune are restored.
9- Illness and harm due to jungpo and the eight classes of spirits will be pacified, as will
conditions that contribute to untimely death. You will be freed from accusations, black magic,
and sorcery, and your body will become indestructible.
10- All lapses and faults of the three realms-including deprecating local holy beings-together with
broken and impaired samaya will be cleansed and your mind-stream purified.
11- Accidents, such as untimely death will not occur and as soon as you die you will be reborn in
the presence of the Guru in the Land of Lotus Light.

Yet the limitless benefits do not end there. There is a tradition in which effort made to gather the
accumulations and make supplications on certain occasions is highly espoused for in the Gathering of
the Guru’s Intent Guru Rinpoche said: “On the tenth day of the Monkey month in a Monkey year and
on all tenth day holidays, my emanations will spread throughout the world and I, Orgyen, will grant the
supreme and common siddhis. If you spend your life practicing the lama, at the end of your life you
will dissolve into my heart.”

And in the terma prophecies revealed by Ratna Lingpa, it is written:

“With the dawn of each tenth day,
Whoever observes my instructions
Will be indivisible from me, without meeting or parting.
On the tenth day of the month, my sons and disciples,
Kings and ministers, this is my solemn pledge to you
Do not confuse me, Padmasambhava, with any other.”

From the Golden Garland of Oral Instructions:

“In particular on the tenth day, I, Orgyan,
Will pervade every mote of dust throughout the Tibetan Land of Snows
With rays of sun, moon, and rainbow light
And dispel obstacles faced by my devoted children.
I invest man with the four powers to accomplish what he desires
This is my promise, the Lotus who doesn’t deceive.
If you have devotion in me then adopt the custom of tenth day observances
And by practicing as I have instructed the kingdom will be established in happiness.”

Such vajra words of truth, which He spoke more than once, will never mislead and so I implore you
followers to take this to heart. It is right that you rouse great effort to enhance the festival of perpetual
benefit and bliss for self and other.

May these fresh and beautiful words inspire others to virtue. May they be contented with such
rich and charming explanations both eloquent in expression and noble in meaning. By offering this for
the perusal of those beings that desire liberation may it bestow every festival of benefit and bliss.

Composed by Jikdral Yeshe Dorje, who travels in every direction as Padma’s messenger. May it be
virtuous and auspicious.
