In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Power point - done How does your media product represent particular social groups?
The specific genre that I have used to base my music magazine on is hip-pop music as I feel that the hip-pop genre dominates the music industry in this era, it is listened, bought, watched and visited by all walks off life from a variety of ages. However, the intended demographic for my music magazine iMusic Official is both females and males ages 16-30. I have chosen to base my ideas for my music magazine around this specific age group as I feel that they have a major influence on music within society and the music that various artist produce. The diversity of fonts that I have used represent a fashionable, modern and predominantly hip-pop music influenced audience. Furthermore, the fonts that I have used have been from the website www.dafont.com, for the title of my front cover I have used a bold and retro font to represent and empathize with the variety of audience that I aim to reach out to, although the font is presented in black it is still a serif font and has a funky edge to appeal to the youth of today. The primary focus on my front cover in the picture that I took of the artist Lauri King, the image of the artist is the centre piece of the page as it is placed in the middle and is wearing a variety of vibrant clothing further emphasizing her modern-day fashion and more importantly, her youth. On my double page spread I have gone for a more sophisticated approach with my presentation in order to appeal to the elder half of my audience of 20+. The font I have used is yet again very simplistic; I have done this in order to make it easily legible, for the artist surname I have written it in capitals and italics not only to represent how Lauri derives from an upper-class background, but how she stand for female dominance within the music industry and society overall. Moreover, to further emphasize her rapid success and influential personality, I have placed a large transparent red L across all the text on the right page, which has connotations of passion, ambition and love, the female intended audience will be able to relate to Lauri as relationships and fashion are generally female generated conversations. The large image of the artist on the left page, is a clear indication of how confidant she has become within the music industry, it also elicits her level of pride and how she would like her success to influence other females to follow their dreams. The artist posture and pose is very flirtatious, which also demonstrates the power she has over man and how she aims to reach out to them, expanding her target audience and preventing her from being gender

biased. Thirdly, the various presentation techniques that I have used on my contents page are used to make it legible and energetic; the bright turquoise background is a universal and unisex colour, initiating the intended demographic, but primarily reaching out to the younger audience as it will automatically draw their attention towards what the magazine includes. The basic serif font has been placed at the head of the opage but has also been replicated and rotated 180 degrees in order make the contents page unique and stand out from other music magazines contents pages. Lastly, I have placed a collection of images scattered across the bottom of the page. The body language in these images represents a more jovial and laid back side to the artist representing how she is able to diverge from her working and social life, giving the intended target audience a slight hint of what she is about, enticing them to read the double page spread in which they will find out more information about her personal life and family wealth.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
The kind of media institution that might distribute my magazine would be Worldwide Magazine Distribution Ltd (WWMD). This business company supply British published magazine to neiche and specialist retailers. This company, has aided the success of other magazine companies such as Q, Elle and heat. As these 3 companies have a reputation of success, i would choose WWMD to promote and dispatch my magazine company as I believe they would be trustworthy and reliable. I would also like my music magazine to be published in music stores such as HMV, train stations and airports in order for it to be recognised internationally reaching out to different nationalities. Furthermore, I would primarily like my magazine to be distributed online as the majority of my target audience will be from the social grouping ABC1 (Graeme Burton) as they will be technologically literate. This therefore for fills my target audiences needs as it diverse and available on different media platforms. My target audience

Who would be the audience for your media product?

When deciding on the audience for my music magazine, I had to take into consideration the hip-pop genre, and what members of society are attracted and conform to this music. I used my knowledge of Hartleys and Burtons theory to try and specify my target audience, following Burtons theory that people are either socially grouped or media grouped, Hartley elaborated on this by introducing the ways you can be grouped, these included age, gender, ethnicity and class. Overall, I found that the main element that hip-pop music magazines always have is articles on topics such as relationships and fashion because they know that their intended demographic can relate to this as they may go through these daily hassles also. Furthermore, through personal

experience of being a teenager in this day and age, I notice that hip-pop genre music dominates the industry and has a major influence on the way people dress, behave and the material necessities that they own.

How did you attract your target audience?

In order to attract my target audience of 16-30 ABC1 males and females from middle-class backgrounds, I used a detailed questionnaire in which I asked a variety of questions such as What feature would you prefer to be the main focus on the front cover of the magazine?, what are you three favourite music artist? and What forms of technology do you use to listen to music? from these questions I discovered that in order to attract my target audience I would need to use large images and make them the primary focus, I would also need to include technological conventions such as applications for facebook and twitter and I would need to make the price realistic and affordable for all customers of all ages. Furthermore, I also attracted my target audience through personal enquiries of interviewing fellow peers and members of the public in my local town centre of whom i thought would seem suited to my intended audience, the answer that I received that stood out for me was during the hustle and bustle one the way to work, whether it be in the morning or evening, the easiest way to access music magazines is though my phone therefore highlighting how I need to make it technologically accessible. Lastly, I used Robert Dyers Utopian Theory, which allowed me to think of 5 main gratifications that I must fore fill in order for my magazine to be successful, the first of the 5 was isolation in which I needed to make my target audience feel as thought they are part of a community, I also focused on the gratification of boredom, as I know that unemployment is at an all time and the majority of teenagers aged 16+ find themselves bored with nothing to occupy them in their free time.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
I have learnt that a variety of technology can be used in order to plan, produce, promote and distribute magazines. Prior to this media task, I had never used Blogger before and therefore had to set up a new account. I used blogger to publish my preliminary and final task which included my radial analysis, a table of my questionnaire which is produced on power point presentation, and my front cover, double page spread and contents page of my final version. In order to complete my front cover, double page spread and contents page to a professional level I used Photoshop, which yet again is another from of software that I was new to, however I found it fairly easy to acclimatize to all the different tools that you could use. Although the process of making my final

version of my magazine took a little longer then anticipated, I felt that it was particularly worth while as I felt that it was completed to a level of which it will attract my target audience, however there are a few improvements that I could make on my contents page but I ran out of time.

Looking back at your preliminary, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
From looking back at my preliminary task, I realised that I should have focused more on my contents page, as I feel that my contents page is still very basic. I also feel that I learnt about various colour schemes and what colours reflect which genres of music and social groups. I also learnt how to blend colours and make colours transparent over texts in order to give a sophisticated approach.
