OVERVIEW OF PROJECT CYCLE

Presented By Innocent Nuwagaba 0782929024 [email protected]

Introduction
Project life cycle serves to define the beginning and the end of a project. Because projects are unique undertakings, they involve a degree of uncertainty. Therefore organizations performing projects will usually divide each project into several project phases to provide better management, control and appropriate links to the on-going operations of the performing organization. Collectively, the project phases are known as the project lifecycle.

Introduction
Project Life Cycle (PLC) is typically characterized by slow-rapid-slow structure i.e. a progressive buildup as the project is defined and developed, full and intensive activity during implementation, followed by winding down of the work and final termination. Acknowledgement of PLC highlights the transience of projects. Importantly, the PLC influences the project management process as each project phase involves different management considerations and presents different tasks to be performed.

Introduction contd
The PLC is characterized by a slow-rapid structure i.e., A progressive build up as the project is defined and developed, full and intensive activity during implementation, followed by winding down of the work and the final termination. Each phase can be linked to a seed germinating into a plant or a human being born, growing, maturing and dieing.

1. The Traditional Model

The Traditional PLC, developed by Baum (1970) while working with the World Bank. Identification (Needs assessment) Preparation (Design, formulation and proposal development) Appraisal and selection (Viability and feasibility) Negotiation & Board Approval (Seeking for funds) Implementation (Coordination, networking, monitoring and control) Evaluation

2. The New World Bank Model

The idea has been that the past projects were not demand driven but rather supply driven, thus project failures. Listening (Identify and listen) Piloting (Pre-testing) Demonstration Mainstreaming(Sustainability & bringing everyone on board)
