Assertiveness is about self confidence which means having a positive attitude towards yourself and others.

Verbal communication Non-verbal communication Anxiety reduction and control Increase in self esteem Awareness of self and others in interpersonnal situations Awareness of social and cultural rules of behaviour

The first major problems for assertion training involves negative evaluations of assertive people by others Confusion between assertion and aggression Problem involves transfer of training, the difficulty experienced by trainees in generalising assertive from the training context to real-life situations

and assert your rights Develop proactive rather than really reactive behaviours to manage aggressive and passive behaviours in others

Eye Contact: while addressing another person where do you look ? If you look directly at the person as you speak ,it helps to communicate you sincerity and to increase the directness of your message. Facial Expressions: Ever see someone trying to express anger while smiling or laughing? It just doesnt come across. Effective assertion requires an expression that agrees with the message. Body Posture: A significant increase in personalising the conversation, occurs from a slight turn torso, say 30 to 45 degrees towards the other person. Gestures: A relaxed use of gestures can add depth or power to your message, and can suggest openness self confidence and spontaneity on the part of the speaker. Voice, Tone, Inflection and Volume: The way we use our voices is a vital element in our communication.

The center was keen to use a measure of assertiveness and undertook some research on what available. The one we selected is the International Behaviour survey(IBS) which measures assertiveness. The scale is long but there are short forms of the questionnaire. We chose to use two short versions from the scale which measure both aggression and assertiveness. The assertiveness scale has 13 items and the aggressiveness scale has 16 items. The questions are answered categorically either yes or no. while the longer scale does increase reliability it is impractical and the short form is quick to use and easy to administer . The short form has good reliability and correlates lhghly with the larger measure. 8

According to the above matter people involved in training to be assertive do not want to increase aggression in other , and so this is why we chose this measure. This scale allows the trainer to asses whether they are indeed fostering assertiveness in people, and it is also useful for assessing the need in the first place.
