IMPORTANT VARIETIES OF
MEDIUM AND MINOR CARPS
INTRODUCTION

 Aquaculture is the farming of freshwater and


saltwater organisms as finfish
,molluscans,crustaceans and aquatic plants, it is
also known as aqua farming
 carps are back bone of Indian freshwater
aquaculture.comprising around 85% of total
freshwater production
carp culture in India is largely limited to six
species,the three IMC Catla,rohu and mrigal
and three exotic carps grass carp,silver carp
and common carp.
India is regarded as carp country due to its rich
diversity of carps in its freshwater ecosystems.
The country is blessed with 15-20 varieties of
medium and minor carps .That have a high
potential for fresh wataer ecosystem.

LABEO CALBASU
Commonly called 'Kalbasu' or 'black rohu'
in some areas
It's feed mainly consists of organic -
detritus,diatoms and green algae along with
zooplankton.
It is a seasonal breeder and spawns once
per year in lotic environments during the
monsoon
The relative fecundity is ranging from
90,000-500,000.
It reach a maximum length around 100 cm.
LABEO FIMBRITUS

 It is commonly called the fringed -lipped


peninsular carp
 It is a bottom dweller.
 It is popularly called the "rohu of the Narmada
river"by consumers.
 In adult fish the lip is thick , continuous and
fringed with cartilaginous layer on the inner side
of both jaws
 In nature it grows over 60 cm and 3.15 kg
Labeo fimbriatus
LABEO BATA
It is commonly known as "Bata"
It is a popular game fish and is popular for it's
taste
It's maximum length is 25-35cm
Both sexes showed more or less similar growth
rate.
The snout slightly projects beyond the
mouth,often studded with pores
It is bluish or darkish on upper half, silvery below
and operate is orange.

LABEO KONTIUS

It is also called as pig mouth carp .


It can jump up in their attempt to negotiate
the the barriers found in river and move
upstream
It breeds once per year during the monsoon
season in June - August
It is slow growing fish, which can grow up to 23-
30cm and 350g in weight at end of the first
year in ponds . It becomes sexually mature at
30-35cm in length.

LABEO DERO

 It is a minor carp . This fish is commonly known as


"Kursa Bata"
 It is a herbivorous fish , feeding on soft aquatic
vegetation and periphyton. It also feeds by licking
off algal growth from rocks and hard surfaces.
 It's maximum size of 1.5 kg in weight and 50cm in
length
Labeo dero
LABEO DUSSMIERI
It is a medium carp know as "Malabar labeo
"Thooli" and "pullan".
It can grow up to 35cm.
Fecundity is low,ranging from 65,000 to240,000
for a fish of 35-45cm.
LABEO BOGGUT
A minor carp , commonly known as "Boggut
labeo"
The sexual maturity of fish occur at 14-15cm
length.lt is a monsoon breeder.
Ripe females are observed in June-july.
CIRRHINUS REBA
A minor carp commonly called as " Reba carp"
It is a bottom and plankton feeder
The initial growth rate of the fish is very fast, even
greater than Catla, though fish does not grow
beyond 30cm in ponds
CIRRHINUS CIRRHOSA

A medium carp commonly known as "White


carp"
Carvery is called "The river of white carp.
The young one feeds on zooplankton where as
the adult prefer phytoplankton.
Although the fish is a tasty one, the flesh
contains more bones.
BARBONYMUS GONIONOTUS

A medium carp , and exotic to India have been


introduced to India in1972 to control aquatic
weeds
 It is commonly called ' Silvery barb' ,'Thai
barb','Java carp','Tawes',and 'Raj punti'.
The fish is an omnivore but prefer to eat soft
weeds like Hydrilla, Najas, ceratophyllum etc...
The marketable size of fish is over 300g.
PUNTIUS SARANA

A minor carp ,it is commonly called as "Sarana"


or "Sarpunti"
One peculiar feature of this species is that the
rate of feeding is maximum during the peak
breeding season of the fish.
It dies immediately in any adverse conditions
CLARIUS BATRACHUS

The walking cat fish (magur)is a species


of freshwater air breathing cat fish
native to south east Asia.
It's feeds on phytoplankton and Artemia
naptulina.
HETEROPNEUSTES FOSSILIS

 Singhi is also called as The Asian stinging cat


fish or fossil cat. Locally called as "Karri".
It can tolerate slightly brackish water
It is omnivorous
Poison from a gland on its pectoral fin ,spine has
been known to be extremly painful
Pangasius pangasius

It is commonly called as yellow tail cat fish


mouth is sub terminal; upper jaw is longer than
lower jaw.
Bottom feeding; carnivorous in habit; mainly
prefers molluscs.
 pangasius is a seasonal spawner.
Wallago attu
It is commonly known as Helicopter catfish or
fresh water shark
Body is laterally compressed.
Two pais of barbles are present
mouth is larger with large jaws having teeth for
feeding on freshwater
Has it is a predator fish it not situable for artificial
culture.
