What is analysis?

• It is the process of calculating and determining the effects of loads

and forces on a structure, building.

• It allows us to ensure a piece of equipment or structure is safe for use

under the estimated loads it is expected to withstand.
How we analyze the structure?
• By manual calculations for small structures or for a single element for
ex. Beam or column.

• By software for high rise buildings or for more complicated structures.

Etabs
• Extended Three-dimensional Analysis of Building Systems.
• We use it for multi-story building’s analysis and design.
• It is a coordinated and productive tool for designs which range from
simple 2D frames to elaborate modern high-rises.
Procedure of analysis and Designing in Etabs with
an example.
• Let’s take an example of a Tower-1 of CHD Resortico, Sector 34,
Gurgaon.
• It is a Tower-1 of CHD resortico.
• Each flat having an area of 709 SQ.FT.
MODELING OF BUILDING
Architectural plan of First floor
• Defining material properties.
Columns- M30
Beams and slabs- M25
• Defining section properties.
Loading on beams and slabs
Beam Loading
Calculation of load on beam.

200 mm thick block (on 450 mm beam) (3-meter

height)
- 200mm thick block +12.5mm thick plaster both sides = 3– 0.450
=2.55 m (clear height)
- (0.200 x 18 x 2.55) = 9.18 KN/M (BLOCK LOAD)
- (0.025 X2.4X 24) = 1.44 KN/M (PLASTER LOAD)
- 9.18 + 1.44= 10.62 KN/M (TOTAL LOAD)
- 10.62X0.80 = 8.496 KN/M (TOTAL LOAD) 80% (Window or
Door)
Floor loading
• 50mm thick floor finish
= 0.050 x 24= 1.2
Total = 1.2 KN/M^2

• Live load
Toilet, Kitchen, All Rooms = 2.0 KN/M^2
Corridors, Passage, Stair case, Balcony = 3 KN/M^2

• Sunk Load
Sunk = 0.075(Sunk) x16(Density of Filling) +0.050(Floor Finish) x24(Density)
= 1.2+ 1.2
=2.4 KN/M^2
Earthquake Loading
Seismic zone = Zone IV
Seismic zone Factor ‘Z’ = 0.24
Soil type = 2.0
Occupancy of Building = Residential
Seismic Importance Factor ‘I’ = 1
Response Reduction Factor ‘R’= 5.0
Time Period = 1.03sec.
Response Spectrum Analysis

• The seismic analysis of structures cannot be carried out simply based

on the peak value of the ground acceleration.
• Because the response of the structure depend upon the frequency
content of ground motion and its own dynamic properties.
• Response spectrum is the most popular tool in the seismic analysis of
structures.

DESIGN

• By the end of the detailed design process, the design should

dimensionally correct and coordinated.
• It should describe all the main components of the building and how
they fit together.
