Carbon dioxide sequestration in concrete:

A positive future outlook

• What is the second most consumed substance
after water??

CONCRETE
A CIVIL ENGINEER’S GO TO MATERIAL

BUT
2
• One of the major anthropogenic carbon-dioxide emitter

• While producing 1 kg of concrete 0.88 kg of carbon- dioxide is

released
An enemy to the environment??
Only cement used in concrete contributes total of 7 percent of total
carbon-dioxide emission.

• 38 billion tons per year of carbon dioxide are emitted per year

Co2 : a major proponent of global warming
• absorbs long wave radiation and re-emit them towards earth surface
Global warming: a big deal

Carbonation in concrete
Methods
• Conventional
  to reduce CO2 production
approach
• reaction between calcium hydroxide and carbon dioxide
Because of concrete
• A negative trait for reinforcement concrete as reinforcing steel is corroded

• CO2 + H2O H2CO3 2H+ + CO3-2

BUT FIRST………..
H2O + CaO Ca(OH)2 2(OH)-2 +Ca+2
Ca+2 + CO3-2 3

• To study the extent of carbonation various studies like X-ray diffraction technique, thermal
gravimetric analysis to measure the amount of carbon in sample

Modern approach to carbonation:

• Accelerated curing of carbon dioxide concrete

• Involves following two reactions

3 CaO.SiO (s) + 3CO2(aq) SiO2(s) + 3CaCO3(s)
2 CaO.SiO (s) + 2CO2 (aq) SiO2(s) + 2CaCO3 (s)

• cement rich in calcium specially dicalcium silicate and tricalcium silicate

• CO2 reacts with cement minerals

CO2
Advantages
• Viable alternative to steam curing, useful for water scarce countries

• Rapid strength gain of concrete

• Thermodynamically stable calcium carbonate formation thus preventing

CO2 to reach to atmosphere again, reduces carbon footprint

• Reduced porosity and permeability

Carbonation in development of carbonated aggregated using iron
and steel slags
• Reusability limited mainly due to expansive nature of Mgo and Cao
found in slag
• High reactivity to CO2 in comparision to virgin minerals
• Rich in C2S , reacts to from C-S-H and CaCO3
• Carbonation also gets rid of this expansive behavior
• CO2 activating strength and stability in otherwise landfill waste
• Enhancing physical property of slag
Concrete ways of solving concrete problems
• Carbonation in concrete still in an infancy stage

• Still not tried on large scale,

• CO2 produced from cement industry can be used directly

• Cost of buying CO2 is compensated by having to use less cement which is the most
expensive material in concrete

• Companies like solidia, carbon cure, calera e.t.c are working on this matter

• Great scope for future research
