The Greeting “ 你好” (nǐ hǎo)
1) It is an everyday greeting and is used at any time,
on any occasion and by a person of any social
status. The reply should also be “ 你好” .
2) Addressing to more than one person, use
“ 你们” (nǐmen).
3) To show respect to a person with higher status
than the speaker, use “ 您” (nǐn, you), 。
你好 (common hello)
您好 (hello with high regard)
The Greeting “ 你好吗 ?”
It is an everyday greeting and is usually used
between acquaintances. The reply would be “ 我
很好” for affirmative or “ 不好” (bù, not) for
negative responses ( 不好 can only be used if
friends and not with strangers).

你好吗 ? —— 我很好 / —— 我不好

Tones (Four Tones)

• There are four basic tones in Chinese, respectively
called the 1st tone, the 2nd tone, the 3rd tone, and the
4th tone. They make a difference in meaning.

Chinese Syllables 汉语的音节
A Chinese syllable is usually made up of an initial, a final
and a tone. Generally speaking, one Chinese character
corresponds to one syllable. A Chinese syllable can have no
initial, but must have a final and a tone.

Tone Sandhi: 3rd tone + 3rd tone
两个三声音节的连读变调
When two 3rd tone syllables are read in
sequnece, the first syllable turns into the 2nd
tone, i.e., the 3+3 sequence becomes 2+3 one.
However, when put in the written form, the
original tone is kept.
