SPACE SAVING HOSTEL TABLE

Product Design 5
INTRODUCTION TO PROJECT
 Hostel life is much fundamental for understudies yet at the
same time there are a few constraints". There are many issues
and limitations in the hostel life Like water problem, Food
problem, Electricity problem, Security Problem, Furniture
problem.
 Students residing within the hostels do not have adequate
furniture and space for their everyday works. Due to
increasing enrollments in university students have less space
for themselves as they have to accommodate with more
number of students. Since furniture is a necessity and not a
luxury every student needs it for their daily task. Furniture is
tacking almost 50% floor space therefore living in a small
space requires a smart and space saving furniture solution to
provide the students ease in moving within the room easily by
smartly using this 50% space of the room.
 75% space in a hostel room of UET is occupied by the beds
and Almira's. Then also putting the tables inside the room
leaves no space for the students to walk freely or offer Namaz
in the unoccupied space easily. Even two students cant offer
Namaz at the same time due to shortage of space.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
 The workspace for product design students’ needs to be
redesigned as in the hostels there is no sufficient space for
them to do their work as the tables that are available in the
UET hostels are not specifically for the product design
students hence they are not even ergonomically fit for
students.
Problems that students most commonly face is
 • During drafting the sheet one has to bend its head and has to stand for
completing the sheet. Which causes severe neck and back pain.
 • The size of chair and table do not match ergonomically. The angle of sight is
never maintained.
 • There is no proper storage for students to place their colors and other
accessories.
 • Shortage of space. Students do not have much space to place a large table
or whole workspace in the room.
MISSION
“Designing a workspace for the designer that will assist its
performance and will provide ease in its work’’
SUGGESTIONS
 Furniture in the hostels should be smart and space saving so
that the space can be utilized to its full.
• Tables in the hostels are main area which can be worked on
and much space can be saved if we solve the issues in the
tables.

DESIGN IMPROVEMENTS

It can be wall mounted as in this case

we can save much more floor space.
It should must be foldable.
STORAGE
Along with the foldability there is a much more important factor
that should be dealt with smartness and the issue is the storage.
Options for storage
 Drawers
 Shelves
 Rings for sheet roll
MODULARITY
As talking about space saving furniture modularity in design is a
basic and very important part of it. So the designed study table
should be modular so that only the part needed at the time
should be in use and after use that part can be closed.
