LITURGY

FOR YOU, WHAT

IS LITURGY?
AS AN ALTAR SERVER….
• What was your most memorable
liturgical experience?
• What is an ideal ‘liturgical
celebration’ for you?
We often say “I can’t
feel God’s presence
during the Mass”; or
“the Mass is so
boring”. We blame it to
the priest, to the choir,
and to others
“In knowing comes loving.”
St. Thomas Aquinas
What is Liturgy?
• Public work
• Service in the name/on behalf of the
people
• In Christian tradition, it is the
participation of the “People of God” in
“the Work of God” (CCC 1069)
What is Liturgy?
• It does not only pertain to the celebration of
divine worship but also to the proclamation
of the Gospel and active charity
• In a liturgical celebration the Church shares
in Christ's priesthood (worship), which is
both prophetic (proclamation) and kingly
(service of charity): The liturgy then is
rightly seen as an exercise of the priestly
office of Jesus Christ. (CCC 1070)
What is Liturgy?
• Through the Liturgy, Christ, our
Redeemer and High Priest, continues
the work of our redemption in, with,
and through his Church. (CCC 1069)
• It makes the Church present and
manifests her as the visible sign of the
communion in Christ between God
and men. (CCC 1071)
CHRIST’S WORK IN
THE LITURGY
THE PASCHAL MYSTERY
• Christ signifies and makes present His
own Paschal Mystery in the liturgy of
the Church.
• Therefore, Christ is always present in
His Church, especially in her
liturgical celebrations.
…Do this in
memory of
me..
Remembering or
memorial brings to
the present what
happened in the
past, and gives us
a foretaste of what
to hope for the
future.
LITURGY
SOURCE AND SUMMIT OF OUR FAITH
BUKAL AT
RUROK
• The liturgy is the
summit toward
which the activity
of the Church is
directed; at the
same time it is the
font from which all
her power flows.
(SC 10)
WHO CELEBRATES THE
LITURGY?
• It is the whole community, the Body of
Christ united with its Head, that
celebrates. Liturgical services pertain to
the whole Body of the Church. But they
touch individual members of the Church
in different ways, depending on their
orders, their role in the liturgical services,
and their actual participation in them.
(CCC 1140)
Therefore, we can say that…
The Liturgy is done for the
