DEFINE AN OPINION
• An opinion is a statement that shows what a
person thinks, feels, or believes.
TWO QUALITIES OF AN
OPINION
• An opinion has a personal belief, or a claim.
• An opinion can’t be proved.
OPINIONS/CLAIMS…

• Contain beliefs and thoughts.

• Have emotional language (should, best, and worst).

• Cannot be proved.
LOOK AT THESE SAMPLE SENTENCES:

1.I think, online education is very difficult


and stressful if you are not techy savvy.
2.Online education uses multimedia like
gadgets, internet and other online tools.
1. OPINION: I think, online education is very difficult and
stressful if you are not techy savvy.
2. FACT: Online education uses multimedia like gadgets, internet
and other online tools.

• In the first given sentence, the underlined phrase is the word signal that can be used in
giving opinion.
• Signal words that suggest opinion include words such as "prefer," "think,“ "feel,"
"should," "best" and other opinion words or phrases. While fact signal words are
supported by scientific information, numbers, dates, and statistics.
WHAT IS OPINION-MARKING
SIGNAL?
• Opinion-marking signals are words and phrases that are used
to identify an opinion.
• Usually, it is used at the beginning of the sentence to
introduce your personal point of view in a specific time in
your own perspective and style.
• It is used to show the connection between the ideas that
imply the point of view of the speaker or writer.
Examples:
1. In my point of view, the discipline of the citizen in using social
media can contribute to the peace and order of our country.
2. In my experience, social media has positive and negative effects
on our mental well-being.

• The underlined phrases are the opinion-marking signals used to


share ideas.

The use of opinion-marking signals makes the


sharing of information clearer.
Opinion-marking signal words give us clue to
identify opinion from factual statements. Usually, it
introduces the statement that suggests opinion.

REMEMBER…
• An opinion is an expression of a person's own
ideas, thoughts and feelings that cannot be
proven. Usually, we give our opinion and support
it with facts. While a fact is something that is
true or something that has occurred or has been
proven correct.
