GLOVES

1
Basic Principles of PPE
 Primary Strategies for Hazard Control:
Elimination, Substitution, and Control.
 PPE should not be relied upon to protect
employees from hazards - PPE is a
Secondary defense only!
 PPE should be used with engineering
controls, guards, sound manufacturing
practices, and employee training.

2
Employee Training
 Hazards and Proper Selection of PPE
 JSHA’s should identify the specific glove needed
 How to Don/Doff PPE
 Proper Use of PPE
 Maintenance and Care of PPE
 Permeation Rates and Breakthrough times
 Limitations - Not all gloves provide the best
protection

3
Employee Training
 Re-training required if:
– Employee doesn’t understand his/her
initial training
– Changes in workplace
– New hazards = New PPE + New
Training

4
HAND PROTECTION
 Selection based on:
– Hazard Assessment Results
– Common Hazards:
 Chemical Burns, Absorption
 Puncture

 Abrasions

 Cuts, Lacerations

 Thermal (Heat or CRYO)

– Chemical Resistance (i.e. breakthrough times,

penetration rates)

5
HAND PROTECTION
 Single-Use Disposable
 Double Gloves
 Work Gloves - Can be
decontaminated and Re-Used

6
HAND PROTECTION
 Bloodborne Pathogens

“Hand protection shall be worn whenever

hazards are exposed to hand with blood
or OPIM….”
 Hypoallergenic gloves for latex
allergies.

7
UNIVERSAL GLOVE RULE:
THERE IS NO UNIVERSAL
GLOVE!
 Manufacturer variations exist for
same glove material types.
 No ANSI specs for gloves!
 Glove thickness' varies.
 No universal color codes.

8
HOW TO CHOOSE?
 Examine Dispensary Logs for reports of rashes, dermatitis
 Investigate areas where chemicals or mixtures are used
 Note those chemicals that have a “Skin” notation listed on
MSDS or TLV Book
 Note any hot/cold conditions
 Note any exposed skin not covered by wrist-length glove,
the task, and how employee uses or re-uses gloves
 Note if gloves are wrist-length, elbow-length, sleeved or
gauntlets

9
HOW TO CHOOSE?
 Interview employees and determine glove
acceptability, problems encountered, etc.
 Examine gloves previously used and note any
swelling of glove material or other defects
 Are gloves “shared” or “exclusive” use?
 Are gloves kept clean, sanitary?
 Check glove sizes and measure if needed!
 Look up chemicals used on glove selection charts
and pre-select several glove types

10
HOW TO CHOOSE?
 Order samples in proper sizes and place
gloves for use by employees
 Assess glove usefulness and employee
acceptability
 Re-Assess as needed for new chemicals,
mixtures or whenever employee symptoms
are reported

11
Chemical Permeability and
Breakthrough Charts
Refer to Hand-Out
Check with manufacturer

12
SUMMARY
 Select gloves based on the chemical hazard or
physical use or both!
 No Universal gloves
 Refer to and Use breakthrough & permeation
charts
 Discard all defective gloves when discovered
 Some chemicals are directly absorbed through
skin and causes big exposures
 JSHA’s must list specific gloves!
