EARLY LIFE__
• Gates was born William Henry Gates on October 28, 1955, in Seattle,
Washington. Gates grew up in an upper-middle-class family with his sisters.

• Their father William H. Gates was a lawyer and their mother Mary Maxwell was
an athletic, teacher.

• He also relished in playing board games (Risk was his favorite) and excelled at
Monopoly.

• Gates was a voracious reader as a child, spending many hours poring over
reference books such as the encyclopedia.
BILL GATES EDUCATION__

• Enrolled at Seattle's exclusive preparatory Lakeside School.

• At lakeside school, Seattle computer company provided computer time for


students.

• Gates wrote a TIC-TAC-TOE program in basic computer language.

• In 1973 gates enrolled at Harvard University, thinking of a career in law.

• Dropped out of college in 1975 to pursue his business with partner Paul Allen.

• Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is one of


the largest private foundations in the world,
founded by Bill and Melinda Gates. It was
launched in 2000 and is said to be the
largest transparently operated private
foundation in the world. It is "driven by the
interests and passions of the Gates family".
THEIR AIM AND MISSION

• Their aim was to team up with partners around


the world to take on some tough challenges:
extreme poverty and poor health in developing
countries, and the failures of education system.

• Their mission was to focus on only a few issues


because they think that’s the best way to have
great impact.
THEIR HISTORY MILESTONES
• William H. Gates Foundation merges with Gates Learning Foundation to form Bill
and Melinda Gates Foundation in 2000.

• The foundation received over $30 million from Warren Buffet.

• Opening of Beijing office in 2007.

• Launched HIV/AIDS prevention branch in India.

• Bill Gates left Microsoft to work full-time at the foundation in 2008.

• The launching of the London office in 2010

• Opening of world headquarters in Seattle in 2011.


HOW THEY WORK

• To bring about the kinds of changes that will help people live healthier and more
productive lives, they seek to understand the world’s inequities.

• Whether the challenge is low-yield crops in Africa or low graduation rates in Los
Angeles, they will listen and learn so that they can identify pressing problems that
get too little attention.
• All of their strategies more than two dozen across the foundation have
emerged through this process of identifying what we want to accomplish
for people and where we can have the greatest impact.

• Once they commit to an area of need, they define their major goals and
identify a clear path to achieving them.
AWARDS
• In 2006, the foundation won the Prince of Asturias Award for International
Cooperation.

• In 2007, then-President of India Pratibha Devisingh Patil presented the Indira


Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development to the Bill & Melinda
Gates Foundation.

• In recognition for the foundation's philanthropic activities in India, Bill and


Melinda Gates jointly received India's third highest civilian honor Padma Bhushan
in 2015.

• On November 22, 2016, President Barack Obama honored Bill and Melinda Gates
with The Presidential Medal of Freedom for their philanthropic efforts.
