HEROES
LESSON 1
Essential Question (EQ):

“WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A HERO?”

Learning Objectives:
Viewing: 1. Determine how connected events contribute to
the totality of a material viewed.
Vocabulary: 2. Differentiate formal from informal
definitions of words: formal versus informal language.
Reading: 3. Determine the effect of textual aids like
advance organizers and titles on the understanding of a
text.
ancient hero
(1) a descendant of the gods, or someone blessed with
superhuman powers and abilities;
(2) great warriors or powerful kings; and
(3) personified courage, integrity, and nobility.
Gilgamesh
-one of the greatest ancient heroes
-demigod and warrior-king
-manly, mighty and magnificent
-he was an epic hero

Note: Gilgamesh first appeared in an epic poem.

Epic poems
-narrate the important events in an epic hero’s life.
Each important event is connected to other important
events, and these connected events shape the epic hero’s
character.
Connected events
In literature, connected events develop the main message
or theme of a selection and, thereby, contribute to the
totality of a material viewed.
Let’s see, how some of the major events in Gilgamesh’s life
“contributed” to the “totality” of his character.
Gilgamesh’s character had many flaws, and he was not a hero
at first. He was quite the opposite actually: a cruel and brutal
king. Gilgamesh was so ruthless that the god Anu created
Enkidu just to stop Gilgamesh’s wickedness. Ironically, it was
the beast-man Enkidu who taught the god-man Gilgamesh
about the sanctity of human life. Events like these made
Gilgamesh into the epic hero that we now know.
Heroic Connections
Are the events above connected? Why or why not?

How do the events above contribute to the totality of

Gilgamesh as a hero?
Like all words, “hero” has both
formal and informal definitions.
Formal definition
-is a denotative, exact, explicit, or literal meaning of a word.
Formal definitions use formal language (serious tone, no informal
expressions).
A formal definition for “hero” might be:
“Heroes are people who are admired for their exceptional achievements,
noble qualities, righteousness, or virtuousness.”
Informal definition
-is a connotative (based on ideas, feelings, associations, or overtones)
meaning of a word.
Informal definitions often use informal language (casual tone with
informal expressions).
An informal definition for “hero” might be:
“Heroes are the ones who run to a fight instead of away from it.

Advance organizers
-help readers understand a topic or text more easily.
Advance organizers, such as tables, diagrams, or charts.
Graphic organizers
-are used to represent important information
about a topic or text.
If we were to create a simple advance organizer for Unit 1 of our
worktext, then it might look something like this:
UNIT I – AFRICA AND THE FAR EAST: AWESOME ANCIENTS

Making an advance organizer for each new lesson in
class is a very effective study skill. It also makes it
easier to review for exams.

Note: If you know the things that you know, then you
have to study only the things that you do not know. 
