STRAIN
Strain is a deformation of an object due to applied
stress. The complete description of strain at a point is
describes by a matrix of 9 values. Strain refers to
•change
in length per unit length (ΔL/L) or to the
change in angle due to applied stress.
WHAT IS A TENSOR?
A tensor is a multi-dimensional array of numerical values that can be
used to describe the physical state or properties of a material.
EXAMPLE:
1-D tensor is a vector, 2-D tensor is a matrix and 3-D tensor is a cube. We can
image 4-D tensor as a vector of cubes , 5-D tensor as a matrix of cubes and
similarly 6-D tensor as a cube of cubes.
STRAIN TENSOR

The strain tensor indicates a body's state of strain and thus

•its  elongation () and shear (). All components are combined
in a Matrix and form the strain tensor .
STRAIN TENSOR

The elongation indicates the change in length in relation to a body's

total length. Its index corresponds to the axis of elongation.
A rectangular parallelepiped's shear under a Force F takes the form
•of  a relative displacement Δx of the sides. The rectangular
parallelepiped's edges are displaced at an angle Ѳ. The plane in
which the edge has been displaced is indicated in the index of the
relevant shear component.
2-D NOTATION
Strain, like stress, is a tensor. And like stress, strain is a tensor simply because
it obeys the standard coordinate transformation principles of tensors. It can be
written in any of several different forms as follows. They are all identical.

•   since xy= yx, all the tensors can also be written as

But

Setting has the effect of making (requiring in fact) the strain tensors
symmetric.
3-D NOTATION

All of the above conventions in 2-D also apply to the 3-D case. Notation for the
3-D case is as follows.

•But  rotational equilibrium requires that and This also produces symmetric
tensors.

VALENCE ,ORDER AND FIELD
VALENCE :
The valence of strain tensor is that is it is a covariant tensor.

ORDER :
•
Strain tensor is a 2nd order tensor.

FIELD:
The field of Strain tensor is Continuum mechanics
USES OF STRAIN TENSOR

• To estimate Thoracic Tumors:

The tensorial framework allows for direct measurements of tissue deformation.
It goes beyond the evaluation of deformation via comparison of shapes. It is an
independent and objective determination of tissue properties. This methodology
can be used to determine possible changes in lung properties due to radiation
therapy and possible toxicities.
USES OF STRAIN TENSOR

• Estimation by GPS observations :

The software (STRAINGPS) suitably implemented to estimate the strain tensor
from repeated GPS surveys of deformation control networks. We applied this
software to three real geophysical situations. The first concerns the geodynamic
(long term) induced deformation at regional scale, by estimating extensional
strain rate ((0.22±0.06)×10−7) per year in central-southern Italy across the
Apennines chain; the second is co-seismic strain by the assessment of the strike
slip style of the Molise (central-southern Italy) earthquakes (31 October and 1
November 2002); the last regards the subsidence induced strain in the Travale-
Radicondoli (central Italy) exploitation area.
