STRAIN
Strain is a deformation of an object due to applied
stress. The complete description of strain at a point is
describes by a matrix of 9 values. Strain refers to
•change
in length per unit length (ΔL/L) or to the
change in angle due to applied stress.
WHAT IS A TENSOR?
A tensor is a multi-dimensional array of numerical values that can be
used to describe the physical state or properties of a material.
EXAMPLE:
1-D tensor is a vector, 2-D tensor is a matrix and 3-D tensor is a cube. We can
image 4-D tensor as a vector of cubes , 5-D tensor as a matrix of cubes and
similarly 6-D tensor as a cube of cubes.
STRAIN TENSOR
Setting has the effect of making (requiring in fact) the strain tensors
symmetric.
3-D NOTATION
All of the above conventions in 2-D also apply to the 3-D case. Notation for the
3-D case is as follows.
•But rotational equilibrium requires that and This also produces symmetric
tensors.

VALENCE ,ORDER AND FIELD
VALENCE :
The valence of strain tensor is that is it is a covariant tensor.
ORDER :
•
Strain tensor is a 2nd order tensor.
FIELD:
The field of Strain tensor is Continuum mechanics
