MINDANAO – Brief History

Spanish Period – 1565 -1898


- Moros, Spanish word for
Moors, African tribe
inhabited Spain
for centuries.
- from the indigenous groups
of the North of Mindanao up
to the
end, the Spaniards invaded
Mindanao and attempted to
colonized the place that
resulted
into a series of 'Moro Wars'.

MINDANAO – Brief History

American Period – 1898- 1946


- Benevolent Assimilation Proclamation of
President Mc Kinley includes Mindanao as part of the
colonial Philippine Islands.
- Americans used their control over property
and land laws to let allow American Corporations and
Christian settlers in Mindanao to take over the
resources of the natives.
- massive Filipino Christian settlements after
Philippine independence in 1946 until land disputes
became a religious conflict between Muslim settlers,
the indigenous groups against the Christians in
Mindanao.

Philippine Republic – 1946 to present
- 1969 - MNLF was established by Nur Misuari.
- an armed campaign to put up a separate Islamic
State in Mindanao.

- MNLF – became a strong force when OIC


(Organization of Islamic Conference) recognized them.

- Tripoli Agreement of the Marcos

Regions to cater in Muslim settlers in Mindanao.
