The document discusses selecting a flat belt drive for a compressor. The compressor runs at 720 rpm and is driven by a 25 kW motor running at 1440 rpm. Space is available for a center distance of 3 m. The following steps are used to select the correct belt:
1) Calculate the corrected power based on load, arc of contact, and other correction factors.
2) Determine the corrected power rating from standard belt specifications.
3) Select a belt width and number of plies where the product equals the corrected power divided by the corrected power rating.

Selection of Flat belt drive
It is required to select a fl at belt drive for a compressor running at
720 rpm, which is driven by a 25 kW, 1440 rpm motor. Space is available for a centre distance of 3 m. The belt is open-type. Given: kW = 25 n1 = 1440 rpm n2 = 720 rpm C = 3 m Solution , Belt selection is based upon two terms i.e; a) Corrected power & b) Power rating. This procedure is divided into 6 steps
Corrected Power: Corrected Power Rating
Step 1 Diameter of smaller and bigger Step 5 pulleys Step 2 Load correction Factor (Fa) Step 3 Arc of contact correction factor (Fd) Step 4 Corrected Power = KW*Fa*Fd
Step 6: Width * No. of Plies= Corrected Power/Corrected
Power Rating Terminology of V belt cross section • (i) Pitch Width (Wp ) It is the width of the belt at its pitch z • (ii) Nominal Top Width (W) It is the top width of the trapezium outlined on the cross-section of the belt. • (iii) Nominal Height (T) It is the height of the trapezium outlined on the cross-section of the belt. • (iv) Angle of Belt (A) It is the included angle obtained by extending the sides of the belt. The standard value of the belt angle is 40°. • (v) Pitch Length (Lp) It is the length of the pitch line of the belt. This is the circumferential length of the belt at the pitch width. one. Standardized cross-section for V-belt The manufacturers and the Bureau of Indian Standards have standardized the dimensions of the cross-section. The cross-sectional dimensions are given in Table 13.12. There are six basic symbols— Z, A, B, C, D and E—for the cross- section of V-belts. Selection of standard cross section V belt • The selection of the cross-section depends upon two factors, a) power to be transmitted b) speed of the faster shaft Depending upon the power and speed of the faster pulley, a point can be plotted on this diagram and the corresponding cross section selected. For example power is 9.75 kw and max speed is 1440 then selected is cross section B Pitch diameters of pulleys and Pitch lengths. • The calculations of V-belts are based on preferred pitch diameters of pulleys and pitch lengths. The series of preferred values for pitch diameters and pitch lengths (in mm) are given in Tables 13.13 and 13.14 respectively. Number of V- belts
