Emmaus
Now that same day two of them
Luke 24:13
were going to a village called Emmaus,

about seven miles from Jerusalem.
Where was Jesus?

discussed these things with each
other, Jesus himself came up and
walked along with them…

"What things?" he asked.

"About Jesus of Nazareth," they replied.
Luke 24:19-20
"He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed

before God and all the people.
The chief priests and our rulers handed him over

to be sentenced to death, and they crucified
him…
but we had hoped that he was the
Luke 24:21-24
one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is

more, it is the third day since all this took place. In
addition, some of our women amazed us. They
went to the tomb early this morning but didn't find
his body. They came and told us that they had seen a
vision of angels, who said he was alive. Then some of
our companions went to the tomb and found it just as
the women had said, but him they did not see."
How did the two
disciples feel?

He said to them, "How foolish you are,

and how slow of heart to believe all that the

prophets have spoken! Did not the Christ have
to suffer these things and then enter his glory?"
And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets,
he explained to them what was said in all the
Scriptures concerning himself.

How did Jesus
answer their

As they approached the village to which
Luke 24:28-30
they were going, Jesus acted as if he were going

farther. But they urged him strongly, "Stay with
us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost
over." So he went in to stay with them.
When he was at the table with them, he took

bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it
to them.

Then their eyes were

opened and they
recognized him…

He told them, "This is what is written:
The Christ will suffer and rise from the

dead on the third day, and repentance and
forgiveness of sins will be preached

in his name to all nations, beginning at
Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things.
Acts 1:8
“But you will receive power when the Holy
Spirit comes on you; and you will be

my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in
all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the
earth."

Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip,
Acts 8:26
“Go south to the road—the desert road—that

goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.”

So he started out, and on his way he
Acts 8:27-30a
met an Ethiopian eunuch, an important official

in charge of all the treasury of Candace, queen
of the Ethiopians. This man had gone to
Jerusalem to worship, and on his way home was
sitting in his chariot reading the book of Isaiah
the prophet. The Spirit told Philip, “Go to that
chariot and stay near it.” Then Philip ran up to
the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah
the prophet.

so he did not open his mouth.
In his humiliation he was deprived of justice.

The eunuch asked Philip, “Tell me, please, who is
the prophet talking about, himself or someone
else?”
Why didn’t he recognize
Jesus?

Then Philip began with that very passage
Acts 8:35
of Scripture and told him the good news about

Jesus.
How did Philip

As they traveled along the road, they
Acts 8:36-38
came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look,

here is water. Why shouldn’t I be baptized?”
Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart,
you may.” The eunuch answered, “I believe that
Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”
And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then

both Philip and the eunuch went down into the
water and Philip baptized him.
What were they doing

When they came up out of the water, the
Acts 8:39
Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and

the eunuch did not see him again, but went on
his way rejoicing.

traveled about, preaching the gospel in all the

towns until he reached Caesarea.
