ABSTRACT

Most people know that academic performance generally mentions how


well a student is achieving his or her studies and tasks. This paper
reports how alcohol consumption affects senior high school students’
academic performance. Alcohol consumption by students is gradually
increasing, most of the adolescents perceive drinking as a practice and a
part of their personal growth and experience. A qualitative case study is
the research method that was used in this study. Seven senior high
school students that drink moderately and/or occasionally were selected
to become a sample in this study, each participant was categorized based
on their academic performance.
Methodology

 Seven senior high school students (Two grade 11 and five grade 12 students)
 Purposive sampling
 Research locale- Saint Louis College Valenzuela
 Research instrument- Observation and interview
Part 1- Profile of the respondents
Part 2- Student’s knowledge and experience about alcohol consumption
Part 3- Student’s academic performance in relation to their behavior
Part 4- Opinions of the respondents about this issue to provide deeper knowledge and strong
claims to support the result of this study.

Scope and Delimitations

 This study will particularly identify the information about students that drinks
alcohol moderately and/or occasionally, not students that drinks alcohol regularly
to avoid cliché and easy to predict outcomes and discoveries.
 This study aims to determine how SHS students alcohol consumption impacts
their academic performance.
 The findings of this study cannot be generalized.
 (Participants consumed alcohol moderately and occasionally, no participants were
binge drinking.)
Statement of the Problem

Specifically, this study seeks to answer the following questions in terms


of the following:
 How do students perform “study-life-balance” despite drinking
alcohol moderately and occasionally while having academic
responsibility?
 What are the accumulated unascertained effects of alcohol on
student's academic performance?
Findings and themes

 Students’ perception: Alcohol consumption does not drastically affect


their academic performance.
 Alcohol intake can alleviate student’s stress which will enhance
student’s confidence and motivation.
 Most of the respondents prioritizes their study or school works more
than drinking alcohol.
 Time management skills are necessary to maintain average or high
academic performance despite drinking moderately.
Summary

 Most of the students (six out of seven) perceived that drinking


alcohol does not affect their academic performance.
 Most of the students consumed alcohol to reduce stress.
 Drinking alcohol enhanced students’ motivation and confidence.
 Drinking alcohol kept them in touch with their social life.
 All participants are aware about the negative effects of alcohol
consumption.
 Most of the participants utilized “study-life-balance”.
