LUKE 14:25-35

25
A large crowd was following Jesus. He turned around and
said to them, 26 “If you want to be my disciple, my
disciple. 27 And if you do not carry your own you must, by
comparison, hate everyone else—your father and mother, wife
and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even your own life.
Otherwise, you cannot be cross and follow me, you cannot be
my disciple. 28 “But don’t begin until you count the cost. For
who would begin construction of a building without first
calculating the cost to see if there is enough money to finish
it? 29 Otherwise, you might complete only the foundation
before running out of money, and then everyone would laugh
at you. 30 They would say, ‘There’s the person who started that
building and couldn’t afford to finish it!’
LUKE 14:25-35
• 31 “Or what king would go to war against another king
without first sitting down with his counselors to discuss
whether his army of 10,000 could defeat the 20,000
soldiers marching against him? 32 And if he can’t, he will
send a delegation to discuss terms of peace while the
enemy is still far away. 33 So you cannot become my
disciple without giving up everything you own. 34 “Salt is
good for seasoning. But if it loses its flavor, how do you
make it salty again? 35 Flavorless salt is good neither for
the soil nor for the manure pile. It is thrown away.
Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand!”
NFV:
25

dalawampung libong kawal?
Makinig
ang may pandinig.”

TOPIC: THE COST OF
DISCIPLESHIP
QUESTION: WHAT COST IS
REQUIRED OF A
TRUE DISCIPLE OF
JESUS?
 John 8:31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who
had believed Him, “If you continue in My
word, then you are truly disciples of Mine;
 John 13:35 By this all men will know that you are
My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
 John 15:8 My Father is glorified by this, that you
bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples.
WHAT COST IS REQUIRED OF A TRUE DISCIPLE OF
JESUS?
I. IT REQUIRES AN UNEQUAL LOVE – VV. 25-27, 33
A.To Love Jesus more than your family – vv. 25-26a
A large crowd was following Jesus. He turned around and said
25

to them, 26 “If you want to be my disciple, you must, by

comparison, hate everyone else—your father and mother, wife
and children, brothers and sisters.
Parallel passage:
Matt. 10:37 “He who loves father or mother more than Me is not
worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me
is not worthy of Me.

1. In terms of trusting
Psalm 146:3 Do not trust in princes, in mortal man, in whom there is no
salvation.
Jer. 17:5 Thus says the Lord “Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind
and makes his strength.
2. In terms of obedience (cf. Gen. 22:1-12)
Genesis 22:1-12 Now it came about after these things, that God
tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I
am.” 2 He said, “Take now your son, your only son, whom you love,
Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt
offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you.” 3 So
Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and
took two of his young men with him and Isaac his son; and he split
wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of
which God had told him. 4 On the third day Abraham raised his
eyes and saw the place from a distance. 5 Abraham said to his
young men, “Stay here with the donkey, and I and the lad will go
over there; and we will worship and return to you.” 6 Abraham
took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son,
and he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So the two of them
walked on together.
Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, “My father!” And he

said, “Here I am, my son.” And he said, “Behold, the fire and the
wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” 8 Abraham
said, “God will provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering,
my son.” So the two of them walked on together.9 Then they came
to the place of which God had told him; and Abraham built the
altar there and arranged the wood, and bound his son Isaac
and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Abraham stretched
out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. 11 But the angel of
the LORD called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham,
Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 12 He said, “Do not stretch out
your hand against the lad, and do nothing to him; for now I know
that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only
son, from Me.”

1. In terms of trusting
2. In terms of obedience (cf. Gen. 22:1-12)
3. In terms of service and giving
II Samuel 24:24 However, the king said to Araunah, “No, but I will
surely buy it from you for a price, for I will not offer burnt offerings to
the LORD my God which cost me nothing.” So David bought the
threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

Phil. 3:7-8 But whatever things were gain to me, those
things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ.
I John 2:15-17 Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If
anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For
all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes
and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from
the world. 17 The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the
one who does the will of God lives forever.

1. Denying yourself
2.Carrying your cross
This is not to inflict self-sacrificing effort to experience difficulties in
life
This is a daily enduring hardship, rejection, persecution, hatred,
shame and readiness to face death if needed because of your
identification with Jesus as a born again Christian (Source: Ptr. Boy

John 12:25 He who loves his life loses it, and he
who hates his life in this world will keep it to life
eternal.
Gal. 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ; and it
is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me;
and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by
faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave
Himself up for me.

1. Possessions cannot save us
2. Possessions are temporary
Matt. 6:19-21 19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth,
where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and
steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither
moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or
steal; 21 for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

C.To love Jesus more than your possessions – v. 33
1. Possessions cannot save us
2. Possessions are temporary
3. Possessions are not to be served
Matt. 6:24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the
one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the
other. You cannot serve God and wealth.
II. IT REQUIRES A SERIOUS PONDERING – VV. 28-32
“But don’t begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a

A.Calculating the cost involved
1. Consider the magnitude of discipleship
2. Consider the expense of discipleship
3. Consider the consequence of discipleship
III. IT REQUIRES A LIFETIME SERVICE – V. 34-35
“Salt is good for seasoning. But if it loses its flavor, how do you make it salty

again? 35 Flavorless salt is good neither for the soil nor for the manure pile. It is
thrown away. Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand!”
A.Serve God with usefulness
B.Serve God with loyalty
Leviticus 2:13 Every grain offering of yours, moreover, you shall season
with salt, so that the salt of the covenant of your God shall not be lacking
from your grain offering; with all your offerings you shall offer salt.
Matthew 5:13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become
tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything,
except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.
C O N C L U S I O N
SALVATION IS FREE, BUT IT IS COSTLY. IT WILL
COST US TO HAVE UNEQUAL LOVE, SERIOUSLY
PONDERING WHAT IS AT STAKE AND SERVING
GOD WITH COMMITMENT. THESE ARE THE KIND
PEOPLE JESUS SEEKS. ON THE OTHER HAND,
THOSE WHO TREAT SALVATION LIGHTLY, THE
KINGDOM OF GOD IS FAR AWAY FROM THEM. SO
LET US COUNT THE COST OF FOLLOWING JESUS
AND END UP SEEING OURSELVES AMONG GOD’S
PRECIOUS CHILDREN. GOD BLESS US ALL!!!
