TIRE POLYMER
FIBERS
Introduction
 Environment concern and caring has
always been an issue in this fast
growing modern world. Many citizens
from all over the world have witnessed
its constant and dramatic deterioration
time over time.
Introduction
 Tire waste are one of the big problems
and contributors to Mother Nature’s
destruction. These kind of waste took a
very long time decompose by itself.
Long enough for a person to die first
before a tire would follow.
Introduction
Introduction
Introduction
 Studies have shown that using the fibers
that are present in the tires of different
vehicles, it can be reused as an
additional ingredient for a concrete to
last longer and to withstand
compression and tension with much
load capacity.
Introduction
 Reinforcing concrete with polymer fibers
in old tires. In some studies, using of
tires in concrete production confirmed
that it is more ecological and economical
viability to use.
HISTORICAL
BACKGROUND OF
POLYMER FIBER
Historical Background of Tire
 The earliest tires were bands of leather, placed on
wooden wheels used on carts and wagons. The tire
would be heated in a forge fire, placed over the
wheel and quenched, causing the metal to contract
and fit tightly on the wheel. A skilled worker, known
as a wheelwright, carried out this work.
 Synthetic rubbers were invented in the laboratories
of Bayer in the 1920s. In 1946, Michelin developed
the radial tire method of construction. Michelin had
bought the bankrupt Citroën automobile company
in 1934, so it was able to fit this new technology
immediately. Because of its superiority in handling
and fuel economy, use of this technology quickly
spread throughout Europe and Asia.
Historical Background of Fiber

 Fibers are often used in the manufacture of other

materials. The strongest engineering materials
often incorporate fibers, for example carbon
fiber and ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene.
 Synthetic fibers can often be produced very
cheaply and in large amounts compared to natural
fibers, but for clothing natural fibers can give some
benefits, such as comfort, over their synthetic
counterparts.

ADVANTAGES
 Reuse of rubber tires promotes eco-friendly
buildings and sustainable production
 Reduce the concrete's tendency to spall
explosively under intense heat from fire
 Steel reinforcements running through the
concrete are also protected against fire
 Fiber-reinforced concrete reduces crack
formation more than 90% compared to regular
concrete
 Improve resilience of concrete and improve its life
span
DISADVANTAGES
 It has low compressive strength when
compared with ordinary concrete
 Concrete may not have longer life span
as estimated by standard IS code
 Workability decreases with the
increasing of the percentage of rubber
due to the increasing viscosity of the
mixture

POLYMER FIBERS
How It Works
 Adding polymer fibers to the concrete mix to
reduce the concrete's tendency to break down
into smaller pieces.
 Protecting the concrete from fire breaking means
that steel reinforcements running through the
concrete are also protected.
 But this polymer admixtures are known to not
only increase the workability but also modify the
physical properties of cement pastes by reducing
macro voids and improving the bond strength of
the polymer cement mortars to aggregates.
