Separating

Mixture
through
Evaporation
SCIENCE 6 – Q1 Week 4 (Lesson 7)
What’s In
Determine if the following
mixtures can be separated
by decantation.
What is It
In your previous lesson, you have learned
about decantation as one technique in
separating a mixture. Today, you will
learn another technique in separating
mixtures
called evaporation.
Evaporation
Evaporation is a technique in separating
a mixture through the process by which
a liquid is changed into a vapor or gas.
Evaporation is great in separating
mixture of a soluble solid and a solvent
called a solution. The process involves
heating the solution until the solvent
evaporates leaving the solid particles
called the residue.
In Pangasinan where we can find
salt farms, salt is produced from
seawater as shown from the picture
above. Upon exposure to the sun,
the seawater becomes salt granules
as the water evaporates because of
the heat. Comparing to your
activity, the salt and water solution
separates with the use of the heat
coming from the candlelight.
Below are examples of mixture that can be separated through
the process of evaporation.
In our everyday life, evaporation is useful since it can
be used in different ways. It can be used in drying
fish and hanged wet clothes. Rainfall is also a
product of evaporation. Without evaporation, there
is no water cycle that will happen.
What’s More
Write YES if evaporation is used in
separating the mixture, if not, write NO.

through evaporation. What will happen if
there is no evaporation in the water cycle?
