First Quarter Module

Week 3

SDO TAGUIG CITY AND PATEROS

Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and evaluated by the Development and Quality
Assurance Teams of SDO TAPAT to assist you in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to
12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.
As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module. You also need to keep
track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are
expected to encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the learner:
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for guided and
independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to process the contents of the learning
resource while being an active learner.
The following are some reminders in using this module:
1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any part of the module. Use a separate
sheet of paper in answering the exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer Let’s Try before moving on to the other activities included in the module.
3. Read the instructions carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through with it.
If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your
teacher or facilitator. Always bear in mind that you are not alone.
We hope that through this material, you will experience meaningful learning and gain deep
understanding of the relevant competencies. You can do it!

2
What’s my target?

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you master the nature of matter.
The scope of this module permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The language used
recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard
sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them can be changed to correspond with the
textbook you are now using.
At the end of this module, you will be able to:
⮚ Describe the appearance and uses of homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures.
Subtasks:
● Describe suspension as a heterogeneous mixture

● Identify common suspensions and their uses

● Infer that colloid is a heterogeneous mixture

What will I do?

ACTIVITY 1: SUSPENSION

Directions: Follow the procedure in the experiment, and then answer the given
questions. Write your answer inside the box.

Materials: 5 tablespoons of cornstarch

Spoon
Clear glass of water
Procedure:
1. Pour the cornstarch on the clear glass.
2. Stir it thoroughly.
3. Leave it for five (5) minutes undisturbed.
4. Observe what will happen.
Observations:
Answer the following questions based from your observation
1. In what state of matter were the cornstarch and water belong before
mixing them?

2. What happened to the cornstarch when you mixed it with water?

3. After you leave it for 5 minutes undisturbed, what did you observe?

4. What type of heterogeneous mixture formed in the activity?

5
What’s the meaning?
Suspension is also a heterogeneous mixture that contains a larger particle that settles out when left
undisturbed. It has bigger particles than colloids. There are different uses of suspension, we can see
suspension when we build houses, roads and buildings and this is when water is mixed with sand or gravel.
Most of the food we eat is an example of suspension too like paella, halo halo, peanut butter, bagoong,
tomato juice, etc. Condiments, food or food preparation like rice and water, vinegar and pepper, oil and
water, soy sauce and garlic, and water and flour are examples of suspension too. Syrups and antibiotics are
examples of suspension used for medicine. Other suspensions are used for decorations like aquariums.
Milk and water is colloid because it is made up of small particles of ingredients that make it seem
as if it came from a single substance because it has one form. Mayonnaise, gelatine, whipped cream, butter,
cheese, and icing are examples of colloids used for food or food preparation. A colloid is a heterogeneous
mixture whose particles are larger than the particles that form solutions but smaller than the particles that
form suspension. It can be solid, liquid and gaseous in form. Other colloids can also be used as cleaning
agents like soap, shampoo, detergent, and dishwashing. Others are also used for personal grooming like
toothpaste and facial wash. Also there are colloids for protective and decorative functions like paint.
⮚ Tyndall Effect can be used to identify the different classification of
mixtures. Look at the picture below.

Tyndall effect is seen as a beam of light in a colloid and suspension because the light passes through
the dispersed particles which absorb, reflect and scatter light. Tyndall effect cannot be seen in a solution.
The particles of colloid are evenly scattered in a dispersing medium without setting down. In a beam of
light like sunray, one can see them floating in the air.

What’s more to do?

Directions: Identify what is being described in the following riddles. Re-arrange the jumbled letters in the
box and write your answer on the space provided.
_____1. Blend two, three, four or five things. Combine, stir and mix them together. What is this?
ERUTXIM
____2. When you blend two or more substances, some change physically some do not. Some can no
longer be identified and become inseparable. What kind of mixture it is? OOEENEGHSU
____ 3. This is a heterogeneous mixture and it settles down when left undisturbed and some stay
afloat. What mixture is this being described? PSESUSINO
____ 4. Seems like a homogeneous but in reality, it is heterogeneous too. It has small unseen particles
that are scattered. Its particles are bigger than solution but smaller than suspension. What is
this mixture? DOILOCL
____ 5. This may absorb, reflect or scatter the light. It is a beam of light that passes through a mixture. It
helps identify the particles of solution, suspension and colloid. What is this
mixture? LADYNT ETFCFE
