6.0. MATERIAL

6.1. Drilling Fluid

In case needed, the stability of the borehole below the temporary casings will be ensured by hydrostatic pressure created
through either water the or higher density of the bentonite slurry. Bentonite powder are supplied by BFPI. The data
sheet is enclosed .
During the drilling process the boreholewill be continuously filled with working bentonite
(see step 1 in the illustration below). Fresh bentonite may be used as well. The level of the bentonite in the borehole will
be kept constant and will be monitored during the
whole drilling process.
6.2. Reinforcement
The reinforcement details shall be in accordance with the approved issued for construction drawings.
The pile reinforcement cages’ segments shall comprise of vertical steel bars, stiffener rings, spiral and lifting hangers to
ensure a proper installation of the cages.
The reinforcement cages shall be pre-fabricated at BFPI workshop and will be hauled to site vide trailers. The cages shall
be stored horizontal in a stockyard, where they will
be checked and approved for further use.

The segments shall be connected by lap splicing.

Fabrication Drawings of Reinforcement cages is enclosed .
6.3. Concrete for Bored Piles
Ready mixed concrete complying with project specifications and BFPI requirements shall be supplied by transient mixers into the hopper of the
installed tremie system.

Concrete shall be mixed using appropriate aggregates of maximium size of 3/4” with a minimum slump of 200mm and/or a flow diameter range of
500 to 600mm. a retarding agent shall be used to assure retardation of initial setting time of about two to three hours.

Upon arrival to site, concrete shall be checked for slump and temperature, the information on the delivery note shall be recorded in the Pile
Record Sheet.

The delivery note shall include the constituents of the concrete mix
7.0. EXECUTION OF BORED PILES

7.1. Sequence of Construction

In general, the execution of bored Piles will follow the below sequence:
7.1.1. Preliminaries
Prior to each setting out phase, the availability of updated and accepted working drawings will be checked.
7.1.2. Setting Out
The position of each hole shall be set out and verified prior to drill. This position will be marked with a stake by
BFPI Surveyor.
7.1.3. Set Up of Rig
As the Rig shall be in position over the drilling point, the mast will be aligned with the theoretical axis using a
spirit level to ensure its verticality. Stabilizing the holes will be maintained using double wall casings, and the
hole will be fully cased.
7.1.4. Drilling
The boreholes shall be drilled using BG rotary drilling rig fitted with a telescopic Kelly bar.Rotary drilling using soil
buckets and augers will take place inside a permanent casing of 6m length, after placing the permanent casing,
the temporary double wall casing will be installed for the full length of the pile, the temporary casing is installed
to act as a guide for the drilling tools and support the loose soil layers
7.1.5. Installation of Reinforcement Bar
The rebar cage is fabricated at BFPI workshop and hauled by trailers to site. The rebar cages shall be fabricated in
conformance with drawings approved for con-struction and specifications. Approval of reinforcement cages has to take
place in a timely manner before completion of drilling works, so as not to delay the installation of cages, the casting of pile
or impede the piling progress. Approval of reinforcement cages ready for lifting shall be certified by the Engineer.

After the borehole depth is approved by the Engineer, installation of reinforcement cage will commence. The pre-fabricated
reinforcement cage will be lowered centrally into the pile bore, by the auxiliary winch of the drilling rig or by a crane.
Segments of rebar cageswill be connected using lap splicing as per approved
construction plans. The connection will be done while lowering the cage down into the borehole in vertical position. The
segments will be welded on strategic locations of the
cage to ensure that the cage is intact during in

A reference site benchmark will be used to ensure the correct positioning of the cage with respect to the specified cut off
level. Installation of rebar cage immediately takes place after cleaning the hole using the BG drilling
7.1.6. Concreting
After installation of rebar cage, concrete placement will be carried out by tremie pipe. The tremie pipe will have a minimum
inner diameter of 200mm and will be placed as close as possible to the axis of the pile. The tremie pipe will be lowered
down to the bottom of the excavation, pulled up over a maximum of about 200-300mm and then suspended by the service
crane. Properties of concrete supplied shall be in accordance with the approved mix design.
Concrete shall be transported from the batching plant to each pile location by concrete transient mixers, unloading
of concrete will be directly to a funnel attached
to the top of the tremie pipe assembly.

Each concrete transient mixer shall be accompanied by a delivery note, issued by the batching plant. The delivery note
shall include the mix constituents, slump and
temperature of concrete at the batching plant. A copy of the delivery note shall be made available to BFPI for QA/QC
purposes. The concrete properties will be monitored and recorded for each transient mixer.

7.1.7. Extraction of Casing

Figure 8 - Concreting Works
Temporary Casing shall be extracted after the concreting process is completed. The extraction can be
done by the drilling rig.
