    TELLING THE FUNCTION OF TOOLS,
    MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT

    In this unit, we will talk about how to tell the function of tools, machines and equipment that the
    students use in their workshop.
    There are three ways to tell the function of tools, machines and the equipment.
    1. The use of WITH
    2. The use of TO INFINITIVE ( TO + BASE FORM OF VERB)
    3. The use of TO BE + USED FOR + V-ING (am, are, is, was, were, be, being, been)
    LOOK AT THE FOLLOWING PICTURES

    What is the name of the tool?


    It is an open wrench/spanner

    What is the function of the tool?


    YOU CAN USE THE FOLLOWING WAYS
    1. The use of WITH
    The tool is an open wrench/ open spanner.
    We loosen and tighten the bolt WITH an open wrench. (simple present)
    Nur Harmi loosens and tightens the bolt with an open wrench. (simple present)
    Alif loosened and tightened the bolt with an open wrench yesterday. (past tense)
    Rifqi is loosening and tightening the bolt with an open wrench now. (present cont.)
    2. The use of TO INFINITIVE (TO + BASE FORM of VERB)
    John is using an open wrench TO LOOSEN and TIGHTEN the bolt. (present cont.)
    Revvy and Putri use an open wrench to loosen and to tighten the bolt. (simple present)
    Geraldo used an open wrench to loosen and tighten the bolt yesterday. (simple past)

    3. The use of TO BE + USED FOR + V – ING (PASSIVE VOICE)


    An open wrench IS USED FOR LOOSENING AND TIGHTHENING the bolt.
    Open wrenches ARE USED FOR LOOSENING AND TIGHTENING the bolt.

    THE EQUIPMENT IS A WELDING MASK

    To tell the function you can say:

    1. Ryan protects his face and eyes during the welding process WITH a welding mask.

    2. The students use a welding mask TO PROTECT their face and eyes.

    3. A welding mask IS USED FOR PROTECTING face and eyes during welding.

    4. Welding masks ARE USED FOR PROTECTING face and eyes during welding.

    THE EQUIPMENT IS A PAIR OF GOGGLES

    To tell the function you can say:

    1. Mr. John protects his eyes WITH a pair of goggles.

    2. We use a pair of goggles TO PROTECT our eyes.

    3. A pair of goggles IS USED FOR PROTECTING eyes during welding.


    LET’S PRACTICE

    Look at the following pictures and tell the function using the patterns before.
    INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT

    1. THE ASSIGNMENT COMES IN FORM OF POWER POINT PRESENTATION.


    2. TAKE PICTURES OF 3 TOOLS, 3 MACHINES, AND 3 EQUIPMENT FROM YOUR
    WORKSHOP.
    3. PRACTICE TELLING THE FUNCTION OF EACH TOOLS, MACHINES AND
    EQUIPMENT THAT YOU HAVE CHOSEN IN 3 WAYS.
    4. NEXT MEETING, EACH STUDENT WILL TELL THE FUNCTION OF THE TOOLS,
    MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT THAT HAVE BEEN CHOSEN.
