PHASE CHANGES

& PHASE
DIAGRAM
GENERAL CHEMISTRY 2
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the you will be able to:
Describe the nature of the solid-liquid, liquid-vapor,
and solid-vapor phase change in terms of energy changes
and increase or decrease in molecular order
Explain the heating and cooling curves of substances
Interpret and gain information from phase diagrams
PHASE CHANGE
• Phase Change depends on three (3) Factors:
1. nature of the substance
2. Temperature
3. Pressure of its environment

Phase Changes involves heat energy absorption or heat

energy release.
THERMAL PROCESSES
ENDOTHERMIC
Gain / absorption of heat by the substance from the environment

EXOTHERMIC
Loss / release of heat by the substance to the environment

HEATING CURVE
HEAT OF FUSION
The amount of energy required to overcome
the intermolecular forces to convert a solid
into a liquid
Latent (hidden) heat
Its addition is not accompanied by a
temperature change
HEAT OF
VAPORIZATION
The energy required to change exactly one
gram of liquid to vapor at its normal boiling
point
The attractive forces between the liquid
molecules are overcome during vaporization
Larger than corresponding heat of fusion
SUPERCOOLING
• A phenomenon where liquids are cooled
below their normal freezing point before
freezing occurs.

PHASE DIAGRAMS

• A convenient way to represent graphically the

conditions at which a particular state is stable

DIAGRAM
Triple Point
Refers to the temperature and pressure at which all three
phases (solid, liquid, and gas) coexist in a dynamic
equilibrium

Critical Point
Refers to the critical temperature and the critical pressure
together
SUPER CRITICAL FLUID
• The two phases blend into one another to
form neither liquid nor gas.
