GENERAL CHEMISTRY 2
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the you will be able to:
Describe the nature of the solid-liquid, liquid-vapor,
and solid-vapor phase change in terms of energy changes
and increase or decrease in molecular order
Explain the heating and cooling curves of substances
Interpret and gain information from phase diagrams
PHASE CHANGE
• Phase Change depends on three (3) Factors:
1. nature of the substance
2. Temperature
3. Pressure of its environment
EXOTHERMIC
Loss / release of heat by the substance to the environment

HEATING CURVE
HEAT OF FUSION
The amount of energy required to overcome
the intermolecular forces to convert a solid
into a liquid
Latent (hidden) heat
Its addition is not accompanied by a
temperature change
HEAT OF
VAPORIZATION
The energy required to change exactly one
gram of liquid to vapor at its normal boiling
point
The attractive forces between the liquid
molecules are overcome during vaporization
Larger than corresponding heat of fusion
SUPERCOOLING
• A phenomenon where liquids are cooled
below their normal freezing point before
freezing occurs.

Critical Point
Refers to the critical temperature and the critical pressure
together
SUPER CRITICAL FLUID
• The two phases blend into one another to
form neither liquid nor gas.
